Top seed Jannik Sinner injured his foot in his third-round match against Tallon Griekspoor of the Netherlands. The Italian won 7-5 but then lost the second set 5-7, before the injury forced him to retire in the third set when he was trailing 2-3.
Meanwhile, 38-year-old Novak Djokovic had a slow start, losing 4-6 to Yannik Hanfmann in the first set. He then showed his mettle to come back and win the next two sets with a score of 7-5, 6-3 to end the match after 2 hours and 42 minutes.
Djokovic said he "showed a lot of character" in the match. "The crowd was cheering me on and from the end of the second set I started to play better," he said.
I often had to fight in matches where I was probably not the better player. Fighting to the end is something I'm quite familiar with throughout my career, but I persevered and showed character."
Djokovic also admitted that the weather in Shanghai made it very difficult for him: "It's tough with the humidity up to 80% day after day, especially during the day in the hot weather, with the sun the weather is even tougher. Biologically, for me, it's a little more difficult to deal with this, but today I really had to weather the storm."
Djokovic will face unseeded Spaniard Jaume Munar in the round of 16.
