National Shooting Championship 2025: Psychological test for Vietnamese shooters

The 2025 National Shooting Championship has just concluded at the National High-Level Athlete Training Center (Hanoi), also marking the final preparation step for the members of the Vietnamese shooting team, before competing at the 33rd SEA Games later this year in Thailand.

There were only 3 individual records set at this year’s national championship. Two of them were set in the Skeet flying disc shooting category by Mai Anh Tuan (Thanh Hoa) and Dinh Hong Thuy ( Hanoi ), and the remaining record was set by shooter Le Nghia (Hanoi) in the men’s Trap flying disc event.

Besides, there were two notable team records in the men's 10 meter air rifle team event, by shooters Tran An Tin, Nguyen Tam Quang and Tran Duc Van (HCMC) with 1857.9 points, breaking the old record of 1850.3 points. And Hoang Thi Tuat, Nguyen Hai Ly, Nguyen Tuyet Mai of the Hanoi team, broke the record in the women's Trap Flying Disc event with 266 points, the old record was 221 points.

Commenting on the lack of personal records in events considered to be the strengths of key members of the national team, head coach of the Vietnamese shooting team Nghiem Viet Hung said that the coaching staff did not focus on personal achievements in this tournament, "mainly observing the competition process of the shooters".

The most important factors are the mentality and how the shooters handle situations in specific competition conditions. This is the basis for the coaching staff to have an accurate view and plan to improve their skills during the process of returning to focus on preparing for the 33rd SEA Games.

At the tournament, the key shooters all competed relatively successfully. Among them, shooter Ha Minh Thanh (Army) won 5 gold medals, with 3 individual and 2 team events, Hoang Thi Tuat (Hanoi) also won 5 gold medals, including 2 individual and 3 team events. Meanwhile, Trinh Thu Vinh and Pham Quang Huy also won gold medals in both individual and team events, although not as expected.

"I feel like I haven't reached my peak form yet and I hope that from now until the time of preparing for the SEA Games, I will be in the best form," said shooter Trinh Thu Vinh. In this year's tournament, the 2000-born shooter won the gold medal in the women's 25-meter sport pistol event. In the women's 10-meter air pistol event, although she topped the qualifying round with 574 points, in the final, Thu Vinh only ranked third, winning the bronze medal with 215.0 points. The gold medal in this event belonged to Bui Thuy Thu Thuy (Hanoi) with 236.8 points.

"My performance in the 10 meter air pistol event and competition process were not very good, but in the women's 25 meter sport pistol event, I have been stable and gradually feel better," Thu Vinh shared. In the coming time, she and her coach will focus on improving their physical strength and expertise, "I will have to have appropriate exercises and competition methods to improve my performance," Thu Vinh emphasized.

Meanwhile, shooter Pham Quang Huy ( Hai Phong ) also won a gold medal in the men's 50 meter slow-fire pistol event with 555 points. Although his standard scores were higher than in other competitions, like his teammate in the national team, Quang Huy was not really satisfied with the overall competition results, "I still need to improve to achieve my best performance," Huy said.

According to coach Nghiem Viet Hung, shooting is a long preparation process. The main shooters have been preparing since the beginning of the year and the national championship is one of the most thorough tests of performance. "We are satisfied with the results of the main force preparing for the 33rd SEA Games," said Mr. Hung.

This week, the members of the Vietnamese shooting team have one final professional test, which is to compete at the 2025 Southeast Asian Shooting Championship in Thailand (October 7-19). This is certainly an opportunity for key shooters to improve their performance, while the coaching staff observes and evaluates the main opponents in the region.
