The Slovak Prime Minister met with the head of NATO before the opening of the European Union (EU) Summit from December 14-15 in Brussels (Belgium). According to Mr. Fico, there is no military solution to the Ukraine conflict and there are no peace initiatives in this direction from the EU or NATO.
Slovakia essentially believes that military aid does not help resolve the situation in Ukraine. Meanwhile, Mr. Stoltenberg asserts that stopping aid will not shorten but on the contrary prolong the conflict.
In addition, Mr. Stoltenberg said that Russian President Vladimir Putin is not ready for peace. Even the Kremlin is preparing for a long journey in the context of this country increasing weapons production and seeking more supplies from China and North Korea. Mr. Stoltenberg stated that "NATO is not involved in the conflict but supports Ukraine's right to self-defense."
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Fico hopes that Slovakia's different views with NATO on the Ukraine conflict will not further complicate the dialogue process between the two sides, but still emphasizes that he "sees no reason to change the Slovak government's position with NATO".
