Recently, accompanying the staff of Da Do Irrigation Works Exploitation Company Limited to inspect the protection corridor of the irrigation works on Da Do River, reporters of Hai Phong Newspaper, Radio and Television saw that many locations on the river were silted up, shallow, and even some areas were silted up into mounds of land rising above the water surface. For example, at the point from Doi Bridge to Co Tieu Sluice, about 4 km of silting affected the ability to lead the flow and regulate water sources for irrigation and drainage.

According to statistics of Da Do Irrigation Works Exploitation Company Limited, up to now, on Da Do River there are about 19 silted and shallow points scattered from the source to the end of the source. Typically in the areas: The upstream section of Hoa Binh bridge through Kien Thuy commune; the section from Dong Voc culvert to Ong Pho culvert in An Lao commune; the upstream section of Hoa Binh bridge, Kien Hung commune; the upstream - downstream section of 354 bridge, Kien Hung commune; the upstream section of Thu culvert, Kien Thuy commune; the downstream section of Viet Han bridge, Kien Thuy commune... The silted points are higher than the bottom elevation from 0.6 m to 1.5 m, even some silted points are up to 2 m.

According to Mr. Do Van Trai, Chairman of Da Do Irrigation Works Exploitation Company Limited, the reason for the appearance of sedimentation points is that the Da Do River has not been dredged for many years, and the sources of sludge from residential areas and cultivated fields are quite large every year. Along the Da Do irrigation system, there are currently more than 300 interconnected primary and secondary canals with combined irrigation and drainage functions. Because the slope of the canals is very small, and they perform both irrigation and drainage functions at the same time, the canal bed is heavily sedimented, and the thickness of the sand and mud layer that needs to be dredged to ensure the transfer of the amount of water needed for irrigation and drainage, according to the survey of the consulting agency, is on average up to over 1.0 m.

To overcome this situation, recently, the company has organized to collect duckweed to clear the flow, coordinate with local authorities to clear some ponds and lagoons adjacent to the river, and build banks in some sections to prevent encroachment in order to expand the space of the riverbed. With large-scale sedimentation and shallow areas, the company has not been able to dredge because the cost is very high.

The Da Do irrigation system covers the land area of ​​5 districts formerly belonging to Hai Phong city, including: Kien An, Duong Kinh, Do Son, An Lao, Kien Thuy, with a total natural area of ​​33,980 hectares, of which the area requiring drainage is 32,587 hectares, the agricultural land area is 16,018 hectares. The Da Do irrigation system has the task of actively draining water for 32,587 hectares of natural land of the system; actively supplying irrigation water for 16,018 hectares of agricultural land, 457 hectares of forestry land, 2,990 hectares of aquaculture land. Annually, it supplies an average of 85.22 million ^m3 of raw water for industry and urban areas, 3.316 million ^m3 of water for livestock and 22.10 million ^m3 of water for the environment.

The appearance of sedimentation and shallow areas in the system has significantly affected the regulation of water resources, serving the production of more than 30,000 hectares of rice and crops. At the same time, it reduces the water storage capacity in the 5 dry months, affecting the supply of domestic water for about 1/3 of the population in the eastern part of Hai Phong and water plants, industrial zones and clusters in the city.

In order to improve the capacity of water resource regulation, irrigation, drainage and people's livelihood in recent years, the Central Government and the city have paid attention to investing in renovating and upgrading a number of works on the route, mainly the culverts along the canal banks and some key works, initially overcoming the shortcomings arising on the river route.

It is known that the Department of Agriculture and Environment has just proposed that the city allocate 3,288 billion VND from the medium-term public investment capital for the period 2026 - 2030 to protect and improve the water quality of the three rivers Da Do, Gia and Re. In particular, the project to protect and improve the water quality of Da Do river (dredging, embankment, bank reinforcement, construction of works on Da Do canal) with a total estimated cost of more than 2,000 billion VND aims to overcome shallow locations, some low canal banks, landslides, damaged riverbank sluices that do not ensure water regulation into level 1 canals; wastewater discharged directly into Da Do river affects the quality of water sources.
