Ha Tinh City pilots letting middle school students take Saturday off

On September 24, Mr. Tran Hung Quoc, Deputy Head of the Department of Education and Training of Ha Tinh city (Ha Tinh province), said that this unit is piloting a program for middle school students in the area to have Saturdays off from school.

Accordingly, in the 2024-2025 school year, the city will pilot the policy of teaching 5 days a week (from Monday to Friday) after receiving approval from the Department of Education and Training.

Ha Tinh City has 8 out of 9 secondary schools that are piloting Saturday school closures. This is to reduce pressure on teachers and students.

After more than a week of implementation, the above policy has received high consensus from teachers, parents and students.

The city's Department of Education and Training also requires schools to have a plan to arrange teaching and learning in accordance with regulations, not exceeding 8 periods per day, not forcing study hours and not cutting down the general curriculum. In particular, this agency also directs schools to require teachers not to organize extra teaching and learning.

"Instead of regular classes on Saturdays, schools can organize enrichment activities in art, physical fitness, life skills, or extracurricular activities according to students' interests," Mr. Quoc informed.

According to the Department of Education and Training of Ha Tinh province, the pilot of Saturday school holidays is an effort of the Department of Education and Training of Ha Tinh city in educational innovation, paying attention to the lives and rights of cadres, teachers, employees, workers and students.

During the pilot implementation process, the Department of Education and Training noted that the city's education sector needs to ensure study time according to the regulations of the current general education program and in accordance with reality.

The City Department of Education and Training also needs to develop a scientific and reasonable plan for teaching 2 sessions/day in schools, ensuring compliance with the set goals and plans; survey and collect opinions from teachers, parents and students to create consensus.
