Sweden fires coach

The Swedish Football Federation (SvFF) decided to terminate the contract with coach Jon Dahl Tomasson after a series of poor results that left the team with almost no hope of participating in the 2026 World Cup.

Coach Jon Dahl Tomasson lost his job.

Sweden have only earned one point from four matches in Group B of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers in Europe, including two consecutive defeats to Kosovo and one loss to Switzerland. This poor performance has pushed them to the bottom of the group, facing the risk of missing out on the second consecutive World Cup.

SvFF President Simon Åström admitted: “The team did not achieve the results we expected. Although we still have a chance to qualify for the play-offs in March, we need to create the best conditions for that goal, and that requires a new coach.”

Tomasson, a former Danish striker who impressed while managing Blackburn Rovers, was expected to breathe new life into the Nordic team. However, after nearly a year in charge, he has failed to help Sweden shape their playing style and restore the spirit of a team that has appeared in multiple World Cups.

Tomasson's dismissal is seen as an inevitable step, as Sweden urgently needs to regain confidence and a last chance for the dream of going to North America in the summer of 2026.
