Bad news for iPhone 17

After an impressive start, Wall Street investors warn that iPhone 17 sales are losing momentum with delivery times clearly falling.

In the initial launch period, iPhone 17 orders and sales saw strong growth, even surpassing the iPhone 16. However, the latest analysis by Jefferies has warned that sales of this flagship seem to have started to show signs of decline just a few weeks after its launch.

“While the iPhone 17 series has seen strong sales momentum, our tracking suggests that momentum has cooled due to generally shortened delivery times. Notably, the US remains the weakest of the six markets we track,” Jefferies analysts wrote in a new research note.

The lead time Jefferies is referring to is the time it takes from when a customer places an order to when they receive their iPhone. It’s a metric analysts often use to gauge sales demand. Typically, longer lead times indicate higher orders.

Jefferies analysts tracked delivery times in six markets including the US, China, Hong Kong, Germany, the UK and Japan.

Among these, the US is considered the weakest market with all four versions of the iPhone 17. Jefferies experts believe this is due to many users in the US pre-ordering the iPhone 17 series due to concerns about tariffs.

However, for Apple, another piece of good news is that according to Citi's research report, demand for iPhone 17 in China has clearly recovered.

The bank analyzed pre-order data for the first two weeks of the iPhone 17 in the US, China, India and the UK, and found that the phone had the longest delivery times in China.

Compared to 2024, the standard iPhone 17 order volume has more than doubled, while the delivery time of the Pro Max version has also increased significantly.

As of September 28, the supply of the standard iPhone 17 has been exhausted. On Apple's official website in China, the delivery time has been pushed back to the end of October. Sellers are also taking advantage of the situation to stock up, pushing up prices.

According to Huaqiangbei Yuanwang shopping mall, the black 256GB iPhone 17 model is being offered for more than 6,600 yuan ( 925 USD ), much higher than the original price.

The same situation is happening with the iPhone 17 Pro series. The basic difference in the secondary market has exceeded 1,000 yuan ( 140 USD ), while the hand-carried version from Hong Kong is even more expensive.

Faced with a shortage, Apple has asked its supply chain to increase capacity to meet demand. According to the plan, the supply of iPhone 17 will gradually stabilize and be ready before the big shopping season on November 11, which is considered "Singles' Day" in China.
