Slovak Prime Minister's Condition Improves After Assassination

“After today’s consultation, the patient’s condition has stabilized,” the hospital treating the Slovak leader in the city of Banská Bystrica said on Monday. The statement added that Mr Fico is “improving clinically, communicatively, and inflammation parameters are decreasing.”

The clinic said on Sunday that Mr Fico, 59, was no longer in life-threatening condition after he was shot in the stomach during an incident last Wednesday in the town of Handlova, nearly 140 km (87 miles) from the capital Bratislava.

Video shows the Slovakian Prime Minister approaching and shaking hands with a group of supporters gathered behind a barricade when a man steps forward, raises a gun and fires five shots before being subdued and arrested.

Mr. Fico immediately underwent a five-hour surgery to treat multiple wounds, followed by another two-hour surgery on Friday to remove dead tissue from the gunshot wound.

A criminal court in Slovakia on Saturday charged the suspect with attempted murder. Little information has been released about the assassin after prosecutors asked police not to publicly identify him or reveal details of the case.

Slovak officials initially said they believed it was a politically motivated attack carried out by a “lone wolf”, but announced on Sunday that a “third party” may have been involved and had an interest in the assassination.
