According to a report by the State Bank of Region 2, the amount of remittances sent to Ho Chi Minh City in the first 9 months of 2025 reached 7.969 billion USD, an increase of 6.25% over the same period last year.

In the third quarter of 2025, remittances reached more than 2,737 billion USD, a slight decrease compared to the previous quarter but still recorded a growth of 18% over the same period in 2024.

In terms of regional structure, Asia continues to be the largest source of remittances to Ho Chi Minh City in the 9 months, accounting for 50.4% of the total value. Followed by America (30.2%), Europe (9.0%), Oceania (8.4%) and Africa (2.0%).

Notably, remittances from Africa recorded impressive growth, up 150.3% compared to the same period last year. In the third quarter, the increase from this region reached 266% compared to the same period in 2024. Other regions also recorded positive growth such as Europe (up 16.7%), Oceania (11.1%) and the Americas (10.3%), while Asia decreased slightly by 2.8%.

According to Ms. Tran Thi Ngoc Lien, Deputy Director of the State Bank of Region 2, most remittances are still transferred through credit institutions and economic organizations located in wards and communes of the former Ho Chi Minh City. The former Ba Ria - Vung Tau and Binh Duong areas only account for about 2% of the total remittances, so they are almost unaffected by the change of administrative units.

In Dong Nai, which is also under the management of the State Bank of Region 2, there is currently no economic organization that directly conducts foreign currency payments. Remittances in this region are mainly money transfers from abroad to individuals residing in Vietnam through the credit institution system.

A representative of the State Bank of Region 2 said that the fourth quarter of each year is usually the peak period for remittances, as it coincides with Christmas, New Year and Lunar New Year. Overseas Vietnamese often tend to send money to support their relatives at this time. Therefore, the State Bank of Region 2 forecasts that the total amount of remittances in 2025 is likely to exceed that of 2024.

Previously, in 2024, Ho Chi Minh City recorded remittances of about 9.6 billion USD, accounting for a large proportion of the total 16 billion USD of remittances sent to Vietnam.
