According to the calculation of Mr. Tran Quoc Duc - owner of the yellowfin white pomfret farming model in Vinh Thinh village, Thach Lac commune (Thach Ha, Ha Tinh ), after 6 months of farming, the family will sell about 12 tons of fish, earning a profit of 350 - 400 million VND/ha.
The model of raising yellowfin pompano in a tarpaulin-lined pond of Mr. Tran Quoc Duc (black shirt) was deployed from the beginning of 2023.
Mr. Tran Quoc Duc’s model of raising yellowfin pomfret in a tarpaulin-lined pond is a new model in Thach Lac commune. Although it has only been raised since the beginning of this year and is about to harvest the first batch, the model has initially brought positive signals such as: good fish growth, high survival rate, stable consumption and price.
Sharing about the process of getting acquainted with this fish species, Mr. Tran Quoc Duc said: “Previously, my family specialized in raising white-leg shrimp, but the income was unstable, so we decided to change the livestock. In early 2023, after a tour to learn about the experience of raising yellow-finned white pomfret in Nha Trang city (Khanh Hoa), I invested nearly 1 billion VND to rent machinery to renovate the pond, lined it with tarpaulin and imported more than 30,000 fingerlings to release in 6 ponds with an area of 1.5 hectares.
"After 5 months of raising, up to now, the survival rate of the fish has reached over 85%, the weight is 0.4 kg/fish. It is expected that in more than 1 month, the fish will reach an average weight of 0.6 - 0.8 kg/fish; the estimated output is 12 tons, with a selling price of 140 - 150,000/kg, the profit will be from 350 - 400 million VND/ha" - Mr. Duc shared.
With 6 ponds, Mr. Duc uses 1 pond of more than 2,500 m2 as a nursery area for fish under 1 month old since the import. The remaining 5 ponds with a total area of more than 12,500 m2 are stocked with fish 1 month old or older and raised for another 5 months until they are sold.
Yellowfin pompano grows well after 5 months of rearing.
Before stocking, Mr. Duc carefully renovated the pond, sprinkled lime, and treated pathogens and harmful microorganisms. To keep the pond clean and airy, and improve the water quality, he used probiotics to improve the water environment, limiting the growth of harmful fungi, bacteria, and algae.
Sharing about the farming process, Mr. Duc said: "Yellowfin pompano raised in tarpaulin-lined ponds must pay attention to ensuring the amount of oxygen; the suitable temperature for fish to grow and develop well is from 26 - 32 degrees Celsius. Fish food is industrial food in the form of floating pellets, algae, plankton, large fish can also eat chopped fresh fish and depending on the size of the fish, adjust accordingly."
Choosing the right feeding time is very important to ensure good fish growth.
In addition, he will feed the fish twice a day in the morning and afternoon. On cold days (water temperature below 17 degrees Celsius) or hot days (water temperature above 36 degrees Celsius), he should not feed the fish.
After 5 months of farming, Mr. Duc assessed that the yellowfin pomfret is an effective and stable income-generating fish. Although the profit is not as high as that of shrimp farming, farming this type of fish is stable, has less risk, and is also very popular in the market. After selling this crop, his family will continue to raise it.
