China launches 96-core domestic CPU towards technological autonomy

Zhaoxin announced the KH-50000 series of Server CPUs, promising to take the Chinese domestic market segment to a new level with 96 cores and powerful I/O capabilities.

Chinese company Zhaoxin has officially launched the new chips, revealing images of the entire chip die, showing the combination of 12 computing chiplets and a giant I/O chiplet.

In terms of specifications, the Zhaoxin KH-50000 Server CPU will have up to 96 cores. It is not yet confirmed whether these chips will support SMT (Simultaneous Multi-threading) or retain the Non-SMT design like the KH-4000 series, but they will improve IPC (Instructions Per Cycle) by 30% compared to the company's latest architecture.

The top-end SKU will pack up to 384MB of cache and feature a base clock speed of 2.0GHz and a boost speed of 3.0GHz.

The CPUs will also use the new ZPI 5.0 interface, which allows for dual-socket and quad-socket systems, meaning these four CPUs can deliver up to 384 cores on a single motherboard. This new interface further increases data bandwidth while reducing latency and power consumption.

In terms of I/O capabilities, Zhaoxin has made a major upgrade with support for 12-channel DDR5 (ECC) memory, 128 PCIe 5.0 lanes (ZPI/CXL compatible), and 16 PCIe 4.0/SATA/USB lanes.

The CPU Sever KH-5000 and CPU PC KX-7000 duo have just been launched by Zhaoxin.

In terms of I/O capabilities, Zhaoxin has made a major upgrade with support for 12-channel DDR5 (ECC) memory, 128 PCIe 5.0 lanes (ZPI/CXL compatible), and 16 PCIe 4.0/SATA/USB lanes.

The package and IHS (Integrated Heatsink) look very similar to the AMD EPYC "Bergamo" series. Even the previous KH-4000 CPUs had an IHS and package that looked very similar to AMD's previous EPYC products.

Their KX-7000 consumer series also features a very similar IHS to the 12th generation Intel CPU lineup.

Zhaoxin KH-50000 Server CPU brings a big leap in server performance to the Chinese domestic market. In addition, Zhaoxin also announced the KX-7000N CPU, which is the next version of the KX-7000.

This new product integrates a dedicated NPU for faster AI processing. While the KX-7000N simply integrates an NPU into the same SKU, there is also word of a next-generation consumer "KX" product that will target the "AI computer" segment, offering more CPU cores, more powerful computing capabilities, PCIe 5.0 support, a new high-performance and heterogeneous NPU architecture, and more.
