Highland schools proactively ensure student safety

Phuoc Thanh commune has many schools located in mountainous areas, areas with high risk of landslides are given special attention by the commune authorities to have plans to evacuate students and teachers when necessary.

Phuoc Loc Ethnic Boarding Secondary School (Phuoc Thanh Commune) has urgently implemented storm prevention plans to ensure absolute safety for students. Mr. Tran Dinh Ngo, Principal of the school, said: "Although we have experience in responding to severe natural disasters many years ago, teachers and students of the school absolutely cannot be negligent. Early on, the school board developed a storm prevention plan and established a shock team of teachers and staff on duty 24/7 at the school to handle emergency situations."

In addition to checking and reinforcing facilities such as roofs, drainage systems, and computer room covers, the school also proactively reserves food, clean water, medicine, and essential supplies in the dormitory area.

Students have been kept at school since the warning of prolonged heavy rains, ensuring that no one has to travel through mountain passes or mountain roads with high risk of landslides. The school has a plan in place to switch to flexible learning if the weather worsens, and has also increased propaganda about disaster prevention skills for students.

Phuoc Loc Ethnic Boarding Secondary School has maintained a food reserve with more than 3 tons of rice, 200 boxes of instant noodles, along with dried food, salt, fish sauce, cooking oil and other essential necessities, enough to feed all students, teachers and staff for many weeks if isolated due to flash floods and landslides.

Schools become "safe houses" during storms

Over the past few days, Tra Tap commune has been experiencing heavy rain, with a high risk of landslides and traffic disruption. Mr. Nguyen Thanh, Principal of Nguyen Trai Ethnic Boarding Secondary School (Tra Tap commune), has proactively convened a meeting for all teachers, activating the disaster prevention and control plan right at the school with the spirit of "not being subjective, not letting any student be in danger" being thoroughly understood.

One of the practical measures is to minimize the movement of students between school and home during heavy rains. Homeroom teachers have been assigned to collect all phone numbers of parents, especially those in remote schools, to regularly update the situation and provide timely information in case of emergency.

The school proactively contacted food suppliers to replenish reserves, especially rice, instant noodles, vegetables and dried foods, to ensure the boarding students could be fed for many consecutive days if necessary. Catering and kitchen staff were mobilized to increase processing and serve nutritious meals to students.

Mr. Nguyen Thanh, Principal of Nguyen Trai Secondary School for Ethnic Minorities, said: “We have proactively allowed all students to stay at school until the weekend. Teachers work in shifts, regularly check the dormitories and classrooms, and ensure that students are taken care of in the best possible way.”

According to Mr. Vu Hoang Tam, Principal of Nguyen Binh Khiem Ethnic Boarding Secondary School (Tra Doc Commune), the school has 700 students, the school has activated a plan to keep students in the dormitory to avoid the risk of accidents when traveling home in bad weather. Mountain roads are prone to landslides and flooding, if students are allowed to return home in complex weather conditions, it will be very dangerous.

The disaster prevention and control teams of the highland schools were also established and assigned clear tasks, always on duty to check areas at risk of being unsafe. The corrugated iron roofs, windows, electrical systems, and walls surrounding classrooms and dormitories were all reinforced by the schools.
