'Inappropriate words' at event with thousands of Chinese guests were a 'translation error'

Quang Ninh: The organizer said the controversial wording in the group's closing event with thousands of Chinese tourists in Ha Long was due to a "translation error".

Responding to VnExpress , Mr. Tran Duong Lam, Director of Cuong Lam International Tourism and Trade Company Limited, said that he had explained to the People's Committee of Quang Ninh province, Ha Long city and related departments and agencies about the reflection of "inappropriate words" in the event on November 9 at a hotel in Ha Long, Quang Ninh.

This is an internal exchange and summary event, part of the MICE tour (conference and summary tourism) for 6,500 employees of Thai Sinh Medicine Co., Ltd. - Khanh My (China). In the tour schedule, the internal exchange and summary event takes place over four days (November 6, November 9, November 15 and November 22) with a scale of 1,000 guests per group.

Mr. Lam said that after the November 9 event, the Chinese company's media team filmed and edited it into a commemorative video . The video was shared by some people on social media with the caption "Vietnam Armored Corps Workshop 2023 - Nam Long Diem System".

According to Mr. Lam, this was an error caused by an automatic translation error. The original text means "Long Nham System Steel Army Exchange Program 2023 - 2nd Generation of gratitude and appreciation".

Mr. Lam said the video was originally intended for internal circulation but was uploaded by some people to a social media platform in China. The video then appeared on another social media platform in Vietnam.

"I affirm that there are no words related to the issue of sovereignty and national security. We do business but never trade off national identity," Mr. Lam said.

In the explanatory document, Mr. Lam admitted shortcomings in the management and organization of language translation, causing misunderstandings.

Quang Ninh Province Department of Tourism assessed that information related to this MICE tourism event has caused "multi-dimensional analysis, which may affect tourism activities and public opinion".

On the morning of November 14, the Department of Tourism plans to hold a working session to gather information, agree on a handling plan, and at the same time request Cuong Lam International Tourism Trading Company Limited to provide all legal basis, documents and specific written explanations related to the organization of the above MICE tourism program.
