Van Nistelrooy agrees to leave Leicester City

(Dan Tri) - Leicester City and coach Ruud van Nistelrooy have reached an agreement to end his contract until June 2027. Both sides had kind words for each other after the parting.

Leicester City and manager Ruud van Nistelrooy have parted ways by mutual consent, the club confirmed on Friday (June 27). The decision comes after the former Dutch striker presided over a disastrous second half of the season that ended in relegation from the Premier League.

Van Nistelrooy took over at King Power in late November last year, replacing Steve Cooper with a contract that runs until June 2027. However, the 48-year-old will leave the club two years earlier than expected, after failing to improve the team's performance.

Under Van Nistelrooy, Leicester City endured a poor run in the Premier League, winning just five and drawing four, while suffering 18 defeats, leading to relegation to the Championship. Now, Leicester and the former Man Utd and Real Madrid star have agreed to end their partnership.

A statement from the club released on Friday read: “Leicester City Football Club and Ruud van Nistelrooy have mutually agreed that Ruud’s contract with the club as first-team coach will be terminated with immediate effect. Ruud has overseen a challenging period for the club. Since his appointment in November last year, he has approached the role with professionalism, integrity and a clear commitment to our objectives, including bringing a number of promising players from the club’s academy into our first-team environment.”

The statement continued: “Ruud leaves with the respect and thanks of everyone at Leicester for his dedication and hard work, along with our best wishes for the future. Preparations for the Championship season will continue with pre-season plans set to begin on Monday 30 June. The first-team coaching team will oversee the implementation of those plans until a new manager is appointed. There will be no further comment until this process is complete.”

For his part, Van Nistelrooy shared: “I would like to personally thank the players, coaches, academy and all staff at Leicester City for their professionalism and dedication during my time at the club and thank the fans for their support, and take this opportunity to wish the club all the best for the future."

Before arriving at Leicester, the former Netherlands international's coaching career included a spell in charge of PSV Eindhoven, one of his former clubs, from the start of the 2022/23 season. Van Nistelrooy won the Johan Cruyff Super Cup and the Dutch Cup before leaving one game before the end of the Eredivisie season. Van Nistelrooy had previously coached PSV's U17 and U19 teams.
