Vietnam expects to export 7.6 million tons of rice in 2024

Paddy output in 2024 is estimated at 43.4 million tons, down about 35,000 tons compared to 2023 .

This is the information shared by the Department of Crop Production at a meeting on the production and export situation of rice and vegetables in the past 4 months, discussing solutions to remove difficulties and promote exports in the last months of 2024.

Mr. Nguyen Nhu Cuong, Director of the Department of Crop Production, Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, said: "The rice production area in 2024 is estimated at about 7.09 million hectares, with an average yield of 61.2 quintals/ha, an increase of about 0.2 quintals/ha compared to 2023; the output is estimated at 43.4 million tons of paddy, a decrease of about 35,000 tons compared to 2023".

The expected vegetable production area this year is about 1,030 thousand hectares (an increase of about 30,000 hectares compared to 2023), the expected yield is 191.5 tons/ha (about 0.5 tons/ha higher than 2023), the expected output is 19.7 million tons (about 624,000 tons higher than 2023).

"If from now until the end of the year, there are no unusual developments in weather, natural disasters, or epidemics, rice and vegetable production in 2024 will ensure the planned area, productivity, and output; meet domestic consumption needs and at the same time ensure the amount of rice for export of about 7.6 million tons," Mr. Cuong estimated.

At the same time, we constantly improve the system of national standards and national technical regulations to standardize the processes of harvesting, preliminary processing, and product processing according to market requirements.

Vietnam's rice and vegetable exports are positive. According to data from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), the global rice supply is forecast to no longer be abundant as India, the main supplier accounting for 40% of global output, will decrease by 4 million tons compared to the previous crop year, to only 132 million tons, according to the Ministry of Industry and Trade.

Other markets such as the Philippines, Indonesia, Thailand, Cambodia... are also forecast to see a decrease in output due to the impact of El Nino and climate change.

Accordingly, global rice output in the 2023-2024 crop year will reach nearly 518 million tons, while total consumption is 525 million tons. The world is forecast to have a shortage of about 7 million tons of rice in 2024, which means opportunities for rice exporting countries like Vietnam.

The export market is good, but businesses are worried about unfair competition when purchasing rice. Mr. Pham Thai Binh, member of the Standing Committee of the Vietnam Rice Industry Association, suggested that ministries and branches take action to prevent this situation, to avoid losing money to the country and farmers.
