Vietnam calls for comprehensive solution to crisis in Myanmar. |
On September 30, at the United Nations headquarters in New York, a High-Level Conference of the United Nations General Assembly on the situation of Muslims and other ethnic minorities in Myanmar took place.
In her opening speech at the Conference, President of the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly Annalena Baerbok emphasized the urgency of finding a peaceful and sustainable solution to the humanitarian crisis and protracted conflict in Myanmar.
ASEAN Chairman's Special Envoy on Myanmar Othman Hashim stressed ASEAN's central role in promoting dialogue among relevant parties, calling for adherence to and implementation of the ASEAN Five-Point Consensus to end violence and pave the way for peace in Myanmar.
The UN Secretary-General's Special Envoy for Myanmar, Julie Bishop, affirmed the need for a comprehensive political solution, while highlighting the dire humanitarian situation facing Muslims and other ethnic minorities in Myanmar.

Speaking at the conference, Ambassador Nguyen Hoang Nguyen, Deputy Head of the Permanent Mission of Vietnam to the United Nations, expressed deep concern over the violence, consequences of natural disasters and humanitarian difficulties in Myanmar over the past years, calling on relevant parties to exercise restraint, end violence and soon move towards a comprehensive and sustainable ceasefire.
Regarding the situation in Rakhine State, the Vietnamese representative emphasized the need to address the root causes of the conflict, ensure the safe, voluntary and sustainable repatriation of people, and maintain humanitarian assistance for vulnerable groups.
Ambassador Nguyen Hoang Nguyen affirmed that all solutions to the crisis in Myanmar must ensure respect for the independence, sovereignty , territorial integrity and self-determination of the people of this country; emphasized the need to effectively implement the ASEAN Five-Point Consensus, highly appreciated the role of Malaysia as ASEAN Chair and Special Envoy of the ASEAN Chair on Myanmar in promoting consultation and dialogue, and called for closer coordination between ASEAN and the United Nations.
Vietnam once again affirmed its commitment to actively contributing to peace and stability in Southeast Asia, including joint efforts to build trust and promote dialogue among relevant parties in Myanmar.
