Health care through daily habits, eating, exercising, regulating breathing and emotions can help improve resistance and nourish yang energy.
According to the concept of traditional medicine, health preservation is a harmonious combination of four aspects: lifestyle, diet, mental attitude and exercise. An important part of the health preservation rule is to adapt to the yin and yang of the four seasons to prevent diseases.
On June 28, Dr. Bui Thi Yen Nhi, University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital, Ho Chi Minh City - Campus 3, said that in the middle of summer, the temperature increases, it is hot, and there are many heavy showers. The erratic weather can easily cause seasonal diseases such as dengue fever, malaria, heatstroke, flu, etc.
Meanwhile, according to Oriental medicine, summer is a prosperous time, when plants and trees bloom and all things grow. The human body needs to be in harmony with the energy of heaven and earth, and needs to be nourished so that the vital energy can grow and flourish.
Pediatricians suggest some health care methods below to help improve resistance and fight diseases.
Lifestyle
In the summer, people should sleep late and wake up early to adapt to the change in yang energy between long days and short nights. Going to bed late is based on the ancient concept of time, it does not mean staying up late, you should go to bed before 11pm. At noon, you should rest from 11am to 1pm, it is best to sleep for about 20-30 minutes to restore health. The elderly and the sick should sleep early and wake up early, trying to get 7 hours a day.
In addition, hot weather is susceptible to cold, cold and dampness, so when sleeping, you should not use a steam fan. Or when using air conditioning, the temperature difference between indoors and outdoors should not be too large (no more than 6-8 degrees Celsius). In addition, do not set the temperature below 25 degrees Celsius.
Bathing with warm water every day is also a way to improve your health. This not only helps to wash away sweat and dirt, clean the skin, cool it down, but also improves circulation and nutrition for the skin and tissues; reduces muscle tension, relieves fatigue, improves sleep, and strengthens the immune system.
Eat and drink
Eating in moderation is always the key to good health. Summer is the hottest time of the year, the body sweats a lot, so eat more sour foods to limit this condition.
People with a weak yang constitution (cold body) should eat some warm (yang) foods in the summer such as beef, lamb, dried ginger..., to promote yang energy, helping to effectively improve the symptoms of weak yang. In addition, people should eat light foods, not eat foods that are too fatty or sweet, and should consume a lot of juicy vegetables.
In summer, although the yang energy is abundant outside, the yin energy is hidden inside the body, so "even though the weather is hot, don't crave coolness, even though melons are delicious, don't eat too much". If you don't know how to preserve your yang energy in the summer, you will get many illnesses in the winter. Therefore, people should not eat cold foods like ice cream, iced drinks...
The health care method does not encourage eating too much raw or cold food because it will damage the spleen and stomach and yang energy, easily causing symptoms such as diarrhea, stomachache, nausea, and loss of appetite. Some health care porridge and soup dishes can be applied in the summer such as lotus leaf porridge, green bean porridge, duck and squash soup... On the other hand, the diet in the summer should focus on light and bland foods to avoid "fire" from running to the upper body.
People should exercise early in the morning or late in the evening when the weather is cooler, in places with fresh air such as rivers, lakes, parks, and playgrounds. If possible, you can go into the forest or to the coastal area to exercise. Exercises such as walking, jogging, tai chi... are all good. Do not overdo it because this causes dehydration, loss of body fluids and damage to yang energy.
During exercise, if you sweat a lot, you can drink boiled water mixed with light salt or green bean water mixed with salt; you should not drink too much water after exercise, and you should not pour cold water on your head or shower immediately.
Regulate breathing and emotions
High temperatures can make people irritable and tired, so mental health is very important. We should maintain a positive attitude and try to limit anger as much as possible.
"You need to keep a comfortable, balanced mood, avoid anxiety, sadness, and stress, which can cause more physical illness," said Dr. Nhi, adding that a calm, optimistic attitude helps the whole body's energy flow smoothly.
In addition, high temperatures and heat often make people "lose their appetite, sleep poorly", easily get dizzy, have headaches, fatigue, even nausea, vomiting... Therefore, to overcome the summer solstice, health preservation also needs to prepare some medicines to prevent heatstroke. These medicines include honeysuckle, chrysanthemum, lotus leaves, and patchouli, which can be brewed into tea and drunk instead of water during the day or boiled to drink.
