VnExpressVnExpress09/06/2023

China's university entrance exams are strictly controlled in many rounds, with the support of modern means and technology.

Gaokao (high school exam) is considered the most rigorous university entrance exam in the world . For many students and their families, the score of this exam is considered a ticket to change their life, deciding their future.

Therefore, China strictly manages all stages and uses advanced technology to prevent exam cheating.

The test-writing team consists of university and high school teachers. They undergo thorough background checks, undergo rigorous training, and sign confidentiality agreements. During the test-writing process, they are not allowed to use any communication devices, other than landline phones, but are monitored at all times. Jamming devices are also used to block mobile phone signals.

The test goes through multiple rounds of review until there are no disagreements among the experts and no significant overlap with other test preparation materials on the market. The test-making team is not allowed to leave until the exam is over. They also cannot write or publish anything related to the exam without permission from the Ministry of Education.

The test papers are then sent to printers with the highest level of national security clearance. The printing units are protected by sophisticated security systems and personnel monitoring. Workers who process the test papers are monitored and are not allowed to leave their work areas.

The transportation of the exam papers is similarly strict. The exam papers are transported in special vehicles, equipped with satellite positioning and remote monitoring systems. In the vehicles, in addition to the driver, there are also representatives of the exam organizing agencies, police and military.

Upon arrival at the test sites, the test papers are placed in reinforced rooms. These rooms are equipped with alarm systems and motion sensors connected to the security system. A team of security guards is assigned to guard the test papers.

At least three people must be present at the same time to enter such rooms, as each room has three doors, each person holding a key.

Finally, the new exam papers are given to the candidates in the exam room.

The gaokao was first held in 1952. Candidates must complete four exams, including: Chinese, Foreign Language, Mathematics and a combined exam of Natural Sciences (Biology, Chemistry, Physics) or Social Sciences (Geography, History, Politics ). This year's university entrance exam in China began on June 7, with a record of nearly 13 million candidates registering to participate.

The maximum score on the exam is 750. With more than 2,700 universities and colleges nationwide, the score determines which schools a candidate gets into. Typically, to gain a spot at the top schools, a candidate needs to score over 600. However, that number is small. Last year, only 3% of candidates in Guangdong, China’s most populous province, scored above 600.
