Playing as a right midfielder in a 4-3-3 formation by coach Gareth Southgate, Alexander-Arnold shone with the goal to make it 2-0. Receiving the ball bounced back after a block from the opponent, the Liverpool defender controlled it for a moment and then shot diagonally into the top corner, leaving goalkeeper Henry Bonello unable to reach it despite flying as far as he could. On the day he wore the number 10 shirt for England, this goal made Alexander-Arnold compared to former "Three Lions" captain Wayne Rooney.

The trip to Ta' Qali soon became a cakewalk for England. They opened the scoring in the eighth minute, thanks to an own goal from Ferdinando Apap as he tried to block a cross from Bukayo Saka. The visitors doubled their lead 20 minutes later.

Not long after, a long-range shot from Declan Rice was unstoppable by Bonello. Harry Kane came in to finish but was fouled and the referee awarded England a penalty. In the ensuing encounter, Kane had no trouble fooling Bonello, giving the visitors a three-goal lead going into the break.
