Arsenal successfully recruited Euro 2024 champion

After Merino's impressive performance at Euro 2024, coach Mikel Arteta decided to recruit the 28-year-old player to Emirates Stadium, in the context that he only has 1 year left on his contract with Real Sociedad.

According to Spanish press, Arsenal agreed on a transfer fee of 38.5 million euros, including an initial fee of 33.5 million euros and an additional 5 million euros in add-ons. Merino's contract with Arsenal will be for 4 years with an option to extend for a year.

Merino played every match for Spain in their Euro 2024 triumph. He scored a crucial goal against Germany in the 119th minute of the quarter-final to help Spain overcome the hosts 2-1.

The 28-year-old joined Real Sociedad from Newcastle six years ago, making 242 appearances for the La Liga club, scoring 27 goals, helping them win the 2020 Copa del Rey.

Merino came through the ranks at Osasuna before joining Borussia Dortmund in 2016, where he won the DFB-Pokal under Thomas Tuchel. In the 2017-18 season, he moved to Newcastle under Rafael Benitez and made just 14 Premier League appearances.

The signing of the 28-year-old will strengthen Arsenal's midfield. After completing a medical , Merino will play in the No. 8 position.
