"Ukraine must have a say in the future," US Vice President Kamala Harris commented in an interview on CBS 's 60 Minutes broadcast on the evening of October 7. When asked if she would meet Russian President Vladimir Putin alone to negotiate peace , she said: "It's not a bilateral negotiation without Ukraine. There will be no success in ending that war without Ukraine and without relying on the United Nations Charter." In the interview, Ms. Harris also criticized the policies of Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump, saying that they were policies of "surrender to Russia". "Mr. Trump said if he was re-elected, he could end the conflict in Ukraine within a day. You know what that is? Surrender," Ms. Harris, the Democratic presidential candidate, commented. Both Russia, Ukraine and the West are skeptical of Mr. Trump's ability to quickly resolve the conflict. The former president has repeatedly criticized the US's tens of billions of dollars in aid to Ukraine. Kiev fears that if re-elected, Mr. Trump will try to pressure Ukraine into a deal that would cede territory to Russia. Asked whether she supported NATO expansion that could include Ukraine, Ms. Harris did not answer directly, saying only that those were issues “that will be resolved at the appropriate time.” “Right now, we support Ukraine’s ability to defend itself against Russian aggression,” she added.
