According to an Economist/YouGov poll released on October 10, Vice President Kamala Harris leads former President Donald Trump by 4 points among likely voters. Harris leads 49% to 45% for Trump, while 4% of voters are unsure and the rest support other candidates. Respondents were also asked about top issues, from climate change, civil rights and civil liberties to national security and the economy . 22% of voters said inflation was the most important issue, 14% said jobs and the economy, while 13% highlighted immigration and 11% said health care was the top issue in their decision to vote for candidates. Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris has erased Republican Donald Trump’s advantage among the vast middle class of American society: suburbanites and middle-income households, according to a Reuters/Ipsos polling analysis. Since President Joe Biden suspended his re-election campaign in July, Vice President Harris has surged to the top among both large demographic groups, giving Democrats a boost in the Nov. 5 election, although the race remains tight. Suburbanites, who make up about half of the US electorate and are racially diverse, are a key constituency. Biden beat Trump in the suburbs by about 6 percentage points in the 2020 presidential election. Before Biden dropped out of the race this year, Trump led his opponent 43% to 40% among suburban voters in Reuters/Ipsos polls conducted in June and July. Vice President Harris began to close the gap when she launched her campaign in July and led Trump 47% to 41% among suburban voters in polls in September and October. During the same period, Trump went from leading Biden 44% to 37% among voters in households earning between $50,000 and $100,000 to trailing Harris 43% to 45%. Reuters/Ipsos polls show that voters see the economy as the No. 1 issue ahead of the election, and in an October poll, 46% of voters said Trump was a better candidate on the economy, compared with 38% for Harris. Polls also show Trump as the more trustworthy candidate on immigration and crime. Trump told supporters in August that he was the candidate who would keep the suburbs safe and ensure illegal border crossers would not come near the suburbs. Trump blamed the Biden administration for inflation that has hurt the American middle class. Harris, meanwhile, has focused heavily on her pledges to increase the size of the middle class in her speeches. She is also frequently voted in polls as the better candidate on protecting democracy and opposing political extremism.
