Ousmane Dembele's pass went into Valentino Livramento's hands. PSG players reacted violently to referee Szymon Marciniak. Then VAR intervened to judge the situation. Finally, "the man in black" Szymon Marciniak awarded PSG a penalty and Mbappe successfully converted.

Remarkably, slow-motion replays showed that the ball hit Livramento's chest before touching his hand. According to UEFA rules, Livramento was not considered to have committed an offense in this situation.

A UEFA statement read: "In its guidance for next season, the Council recommends that UEFA clarify that a player is not penalised for handball if the ball has deviated from the direction of the hand and in particular if it is not directed towards the goal."

The newspaper quoted former referee Mark Clattenburg: "The ball bounced off Tino Livramento's chest and hit the player's elbow. When reviewing the screen, referee Szymon Marciniak was convinced that Livramento's arm was outstretched due to the specific angle given to him by VAR.

However, he did not get to see the angle from behind the goal that we all get to see on television.

I don't understand why the VAR referee didn't give that angle to the referee. It's clear that Livramento didn't bulk up his body. Livramento's arms were in a natural position with the movement he made.

He had no time to react to the deflection. Newcastle's penalty was against all UEFA guidelines. The team paid a heavy price."

Former player Alan Shearer declared: "A terrible decision. The referees ruined the game. After games like this, I don't want to watch football anymore." Another former player, Gary Lineker, wrote: "How could PSG have been awarded a penalty in that situation? It's ridiculous!".

Speaking after the match, manager Eddie Howe angrily said: "The slow-motion replays mean we don't know how fast or slow the situation happened. In that situation, the ball hit Livramento's chest first. That's the crux of the matter.

Livramento's arm wasn't raised in this situation. It was in a natural position when running. It was really cruel that Newcastle were awarded a penalty. We didn't deserve to lose the game like that.

I was furious with the referee's decision. His mistake sealed our fate. I'm really trying to restrain myself from saying what's on my mind. However, I'm proud of what my players showed. Perhaps Newcastle's luck has run out."
