Italian mafia boss captured after escaping prison using bedsheets

On Thursday, an anti-mafia unit arrested Marco Raduano, the 40-year-old boss of the Gargano Mafia, while he was dining with a woman at a luxury restaurant on the French island of Corsica.

Rauduona, listed as one of Europol’s 10 most dangerous jailbreak fugitives, was arrested by the same anti-mafia unit that captured Matteo Messina Denaro, another crime boss who had been on the run for nearly three decades.

On the same day, Rauduona's right-hand man, Gianluigi Troiano, was also arrested in the Spanish city of Granada while collecting a parcel from a service point. In 2021, he escaped from house arrest after removing his electronic bracelet.

The operation was led by the Anti-Mafia Directorate of Bari, Puglia, and carried out by the Carabinieri (national police force of the Italian Republic) and the provincial command of Foggia, Puglia (Italy). According to the Carabinieri statement, the Spanish Civil Guard and the French National Gendarmerie also cooperated in the arrest.

Raduano is the boss of the Gargano Mafia, a relatively unknown new mafia group operating in the province of Foggia in the southern Italian region of Puglia. It is the most violent criminal organization in Italy today, along with the Cosa Nostra of Sicily, the 'Ndrangheta of Calabria and the Camorra of Naples.

The group is believed to have murdered more than 360 people in the Gargano region of southeastern Italy alone. Eighty percent of the cases remain unsolved. According to Europol, Raduano was the group's leader, responsible for murder, drug trafficking and extortion.

Last year, Raduano escaped from prison by tying a bedsheet from his cell window in front of a prison security camera. The escape lasted just 16 seconds, after which he escaped on foot without any guards noticing or chasing him.

At the time, Raduano was serving a 24-year prison sentence for multiple charges related to participating in a criminal organization, drug trafficking, illegal possession of weapons, and other charges.
