At the scene, a huge amount of household waste, including plastic bags, foam boxes, plastic bottles and water hyacinths, was blocked by the trash barrier system, forming a thick layer on the canal surface.
Saigon Xanh volunteers are actively working on the solid buoy system to collect trash.
Installed on September 9, version 2.0 of the trash barrier buoy is a breakthrough improvement compared to the previous versions. Mr. Nguyen Luong Ngoc, Chairman of the Saigon Xanh Club, said: “The highlight of this version is that it allows volunteers to stand directly on the buoy to clean up trash, instead of having to wade into the dangerous canal like before. The buoy system can withstand the weight of 20 to 30 people at the same time, helping to increase efficiency and ensure maximum safety.”
Today's reality has proven that collecting more than 100 tons of garbage would be extremely difficult without a stable surface for volunteers to stand on to work. The buoy system not only prevents garbage from floating away but also becomes a unique and effective floating "working platform".
This project is the result of close coordination between Saigon Xanh and the local government. Mr. Pham Hoang Khanh, Vice Chairman of Binh Hung Hoa Ward People's Committee shared: "The goal of the project is not only to clean up trash, but more importantly, to use the enthusiasm of the young generation to spread environmental protection awareness in the community."
And the figure of more than 100 tons of garbage being blocked after just over 10 days shows the alarming level of pollution in the city's canals, and is also an opportunity for people to clearly understand how to join hands to protect the living environment.
Mr. Ngoc said: “When people directly see the huge amount of garbage being retained, their awareness will change for the better and limit dumping garbage into the canal. The image of young people not afraid of difficulties in cleaning up also makes many people feel touched and want to join hands in action.”
After completing the collection, Saigon Xanh will continue to maintain and monitor the operation of the trash barrier. The group is also nurturing more high-tech projects such as solar-powered automatic trash collection robots, which promise to continue to bring breakthrough solutions to the city's environmental problems.
