Extend the useful life of old school uniforms

The festival to collect school uniforms, unused clothes and fashion waste - "Green Detox Wardrobe" co-organized by B'Lao - Scavi - Corèle Group, REshare and Vietnam Australia International School (VAS) took place today (October 1) at the headquarters of Vietnam Australia International School, No. 594 3/2 Street, Dien Hong Ward, Ho Chi Minh City.

More than 800 primary school students were divided into groups, they lined up one by one, brought their old bags of cleaned and neatly arranged things to the festival and put them in boxes prepared by the organizers. In these bags were their old school uniforms, along with clothes, backpacks, shoes, hats... of students and other family members that were no longer used.

Besides collecting school uniforms and old costumes, during the festival, primary school students participated in activities such as decorating flower pots, participating in green knowledge games, and answering quizzes.

Thousands of old school uniforms along with a large number of other clothes, shoes, and old backpacks were collected. The organizers said that all of these fashion items, after being collected today, will be sorted and processed by REshare (a pioneer in collecting, circulating, recycling, and reducing waste from used clothing).

Usable school uniforms, clothes... will be donated to children and people in difficult circumstances through charity programs.

Recyclable parts will be recycled by REshare into creative products such as souvenirs, decorations or daily utility items.

The part that cannot be reused or recycled will be taken to the factory for proper treatment to reduce waste to the environment.

Every student is an environmentalist

Ms. Mai Thi Thanh Ha, Vice Principal of the Ministry of Education and Training's program, primary school program, Vietnam Australia International School (VAS), said that for many years the school has implemented the 3R program (abbreviation of Reduce - Reuse - Recycle), and at the same time called for and encouraged students to collect old books, newspapers, and publications that can be given to disadvantaged students; and to preserve school uniforms so that they can be given to juniors and students of the next class.

Today's "Green Wardrobe Detox" collection day for uniforms, unused clothes and fashion waste is a continuation and development of the 3R spirit, so that students can collect old clothes, shoes, school uniforms... so that this fashion will continue its new, more meaningful life cycle.

Ms. Thanh Ha said that before implementing this festival, the school also sent information, lectures, and presentations to the classes so that teachers could share more specifically with the children about the spirit of responsible consumption, using sustainable fashion... At the same time, information, images, and videos were also sent to parents. The school always believes that every student is an environmentalist. When children understand about green living, environmental protection, and sustainable fashion, they can spread this spirit to their families and relatives.

Ms. Vo Nguyen Ngoc Trang, a neurologist and parent of Tran Quang Minh (grade 5) and Tran Quang An (age 5), said that activities to educate children about sustainable fashion and responsible consumption are meaningful. Not only for their own health and for their families, but also for the environment.

"I know that the products my child contributed today will be classified to move on to new life cycles. I am happy because my child learns many good things at school, and at home he spreads the spirit of green living and environmental protection to his parents. For example, he switched to using a personal water bottle, instead of using disposable plastic bottles; every time he goes to the supermarket, he asks his mother to prepare cloth bags in advance, instead of bringing back a lot of plastic bags from outside," Ms. Ngoc Trang shared.

Environmental lessons from uniforms

Mr. Cao Quoc Khanh, Marketing Director, B'Lao - Scavi - Corèle Group, said that in the coming time, the group will continue to cooperate with REshare and local schools to continue to bring about festivals to collect old school uniforms, old clothes... At the same time, each program will spread lessons about responsible uniforms; sustainable fashion; guide students on the correct process of using and treating wardrobes more sustainably after use...

Many remarkable messages that the organizers want to spread deeply to students. That is the reality that every year millions of tons of clothes are thrown away, putting pressure on the environment and resources. Most clothes cannot be recycled because they are not classified, have unknown origins, and are mixed with many fabric components (including school uniforms).

The life cycle of a school uniform includes the process from design to waste. Students can absolutely contribute positively to environmental protection. This journey starts from choosing school uniforms with sustainable materials, sustainable design, production, use and finally disposal. So will we let these clothes be reborn into a new life, or bury them as waste for hundreds of years?
