VTC NewsVTC News06/12/2024

South Koreans gathered outside the National Assembly building in Seoul on Friday night (December 6) to demand President Yoon Suk-yeol's resignation over his failed attempt to impose martial law on December 3.

Meanwhile, opposition lawmakers are planning to vote to impeach him on charges of treason, while police are investigating him for "rebellion".

The Korean Confederation of Trade Unions (KCTU) led the protest, with an estimated 50,000 people gathering near the National Assembly building. Protesters chanted slogans and spoke on stage, with banners reading "Arrest!" and "Yoon Suk-yeol, resign!"

On December 7, South Korean lawmakers voted to impeach Mr. Yoon.

Previously, on the night of December 3, South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol surprised everyone by declaring martial law on the grounds that the opposition Democratic Party, which controls the National Assembly, had committed "anti-state" actions.

The South Korean National Assembly held an emergency meeting on the morning of December 4 with the participation of 190 lawmakers and voted to pass a resolution asking President Yoon Suk-yeol to lift martial law. The National Assembly Speaker and the opposition leader said they had to climb the wall to get inside the building.

South Korean Defense Minister Kim Yong-hyun has submitted his resignation to President Yoon Suk-yeol after receiving widespread criticism over martial law that has caused political turmoil in the country.

In a statement at a press conference in Seoul, Minister Kim Yong-hyun said he regretted and took full responsibility for the chaos and concerns that martial law had caused to the people.
