Thailand's health ministry is stepping up surveillance of travelers from Afghanistan to prevent the possible spread of an infectious disease about which little is known so far.

The move comes after Afghan authorities reported at least 500 people infected with the mysterious disease in the Kafshan valley, located in the Shinwari district of Parwan province, about 80km north of the capital Kabul.

Local officials said the mysterious illness was spreading rapidly and patients in critical condition were being transferred to provincial hospitals and in Kabul for further treatment. Symptoms include general weakness, severe pain in the limbs, diarrhea and high fever.

Dr. Panumas Yanwetsakul, director-general of the Department of Disease Control (DDC) at the Thai Ministry of Public Health , said the agency was aware of the outbreak and was taking precautions to screen travelers.

DDC has asked staff at Suvarnabhumi, Don Mueang, Phuket, U-tapao and Hat Yai airports to closely monitor any travelers arriving from Afghanistan. Dr Panumas said cases with high fever or any suspicious symptoms should be isolated for further medical evaluation.

Meanwhile, pilots and crew members of all airlines from Afghanistan have been advised to monitor their health conditions, and wear masks throughout the flight.
