Unique corridor

Quang Nam province (old) has had a direction to spread tourism to the west and south. In particular, the initial step is to locate and open up the potential of a chain of destinations starting from Tam Ky and ending at Tra My mountain area. The advantage of this corridor is that most of the tourist destinations are located along National Highway 40B, starting at Tam Thanh commune (now Quang Phu ward) up to Tra My mountain area.

Following the prominent destinations on the journey, visitors can explore a variety of types of tourism from sea tourism (Tam Thanh); eco-tourism (Phu Ninh Lake, Phu Ninh Commune); cultural tourism associated with the community (Loc Yen Ancient Village, Thanh Binh Commune); eco-tourism, community associated with the experience of Ngoc Linh ginseng region...

The big highlight that makes the route different is the possession of many precious medicinal herb regions. More specifically, medicinal herb regions such as Tien Phuoc agarwood, Tra My cinnamon... have close interactions in the past with the trading port of Hoi An. This is an important material to position the identity of the tour route, creating an attractive story to convince visitors to experience the journey.

Mr. Le Quoc Viet, Chairman of the Quang Nam Destination Club for Preserving Indigenous Values ( Da Nang City Tourism Association), assessed that some destinations on this route complement each other very harmoniously in terms of nature and culture. “Recently, the Club has actively coordinated with functional agencies to train people at destinations on skills to develop community tourism. In fact, most people in community tourism villages have a desire to approach and develop tourism to improve their livelihoods,” said Mr. Viet.

With the trend of green tourism and experiences connected with nature becoming increasingly popular, the southwestern tourism corridor of Da Nang has also recorded some positive signals. In the ancient village of Loc Yen, a number of standard accommodation establishments have been established, connecting experience products with the local community and supporting the promotion of the culture of the land of the Fairies in Hoi An to spread the destination brand more widely to tourists.

With the destination of Tak Po (Tra Tap commune), after camping and cloud hunting activities on the roof of Tak Po were voted into the top 7 most impressive tourist experiences in Vietnam in 2024 by Saigon Marketing (a publication of Saigon Times Group), over time, more and more backpackers have come to the village. Initially, a homestay was also established in Tak Po to serve guests; at the same time, the local government has also actively renovated and improved the tourism environment to continue improving the attractiveness of Tak Po.

In August, within the framework of the 7th Ngoc Linh Ginseng Festival - 2025, Tra Tap commune launched the "Legend of Ngoc Linh Ginseng" experience tour. Participating in this tour, visitors will climb the forest, enter the ginseng garden, listen to stories about the Tra My forest, and learn with the locals how to care for and harvest ginseng. At the same time, enjoy traditional local cuisine, including ginseng-based foods. This is considered a starting step to open up a sustainable development direction for community tourism associated with the preservation of cultural identity and indigenous medicinal herbs.

Waiting for more movement

According to some travel agencies, the common weakness of the destinations on this corridor is that the destination infrastructure is still poor, and the traffic infrastructure connecting the points is also quite limited. The most important traffic axis on this corridor is National Highway 40B, which needs to be upgraded and completed soon to act as a lever to promote tourism, especially when from this route it is possible to easily access the tourist destination of Mang Den (Quang Ngai). In addition, the quality of accommodation facilities, especially in the Tra My area, is also a big problem that needs to be improved to meet the basic requirements to retain visitors.

According to Mr. Phan Xuan Thanh, General Director of Emic Hospitality Hoi An Co., Ltd., in the new city tourism “map”, it is possible to divide the Tam Ky - Phu Ninh area and form a health care tourism area, develop a care center for the elderly combined with resorts, physical therapy, meditation - rehabilitation. Meanwhile, the Tra My mountain area needs to develop “healing” tourism, forest ecology, typical OCOP products such as ginseng, cinnamon... associated with indigenous culture.

In early 2025, the local government announced the Hoi An - My Son - Dong Giang Heaven Gate heritage tourism corridor, which has resulted in more positive movements in investment and product upgrading. With its potential and unique values, if the southwestern destination chain of the city has more support, it is entirely possible to form a unique tourism corridor for Da Nang in the future. Thereby, contributing to diversifying routes and destinations, helping to retain visitors for longer stays, and improving the livelihoods of people in the southwestern region of Da Nang.
