North Korea's longest-serving parliament speaker dies

The Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported on January 21 that leader Kim Jong-un attended the funeral of former National Assembly Chairman Choe Thae-bok in the early morning of the same day to express his condolences. The leader was accompanied by secretaries of the Central Committee of the Workers' Party of Korea.

"Comrade Kim Jong-un silently paid tribute to Choe Thae Bok, who made outstanding achievements in the sacred struggle for the development of the Workers' Party of Korea and the DPRK government with his boundless loyalty to the leader, transparent revolutionary principles and devoted spirit of serving the country and people," KCNA announced.

The news agency praised Mr. Choe as a revolutionary soldier loyal to President Kim Il-sung and President Kim Jong-il, a veteran political activist of the party and state, who made outstanding contributions to completing the cause of self-reliant revolution.

Kim Il-sung was the founder of North Korea and the grandfather of current leader Kim Jong-un. Kim Jong-il was Kim Il-sung's son and the second-generation leader of the country, and the father of the current leader.

According to Yonhap, Mr. Choe is the longest-serving chairman of the North Korean parliament, holding the position from 1998 to 2019. He is considered loyal to three generations of leaders and has held many key positions in the fields of education and foreign affairs.

His last public appearance was at a national day event on September 9, 2022.
