The 4th Hanoi Ca Tru Festival - spreading unique intangible heritage

The festival was held with the participation of 16 collective dance and singing performances, 105 contestants from 21 groups, Ca Tru clubs and contestants in Hanoi competing in the contest of female singers, zither players and drum players.

On the morning of September 27, at the Hanoi Museum, the Hanoi Department of Culture and Sports organized the 4th Hanoi Ca Tru Festival in 2025.

The event aims to continue to preserve and promote the value of the intangible cultural heritage of Ca Tru - an art form that has been listed by UNESCO as needing urgent protection since 2009.

In her opening speech, Deputy Director of the Hanoi Department of Culture and Sports Le Thi Anh Mai said that following the success of previous festivals, this festival continues to contribute to preserving and promoting the value of the art form Ca Tru; encouraging and promoting the teaching and practice of Ca Tru at the grassroots level, while discovering and nurturing young talents.

The festival was held with the participation of 16 collective dance and singing performances, 105 contestants from 21 groups, Ca Tru clubs and contestants in Hanoi competing in the contest of female singers, zither players and drum players.

The oldest contestant: 86 years old; the youngest contestant: 8 years old. There are 22 contestants who are Dao Nuong, Kep Dan, Trong Chau under 18 years old, accounting for 20.9%; there are 83 contestants who are Dao Nuong, Kep Dan, Trong Chau over 18 years old (excluding the dance group), accounting for 79.1%. The performances promise to bring a rich picture of the vitality of Ca Tru in contemporary life.

Notably, this year's Festival has the appearance of many new groups such as: Huong Que, Tieng Thoi Gian, Nghe An folk songs..., showing the increasingly widespread influence of Ca Tru not only in traditional craft villages but also in the community of folk art lovers.

The judges will score based on many criteria, with special attention paid to standards of conduct and style, and will classify contestants by age to ensure fairness. The festival is not only an opportunity to honor talented female singers, zither players, and drum players, but also an environment for the younger generation to exchange, learn, and follow in the footsteps of their ancestors to maintain the source of heritage.

According to Ms. Le Thi Anh Mai, this year is the 16th year that Ca Tru has been recognized by UNESCO as an intangible cultural heritage in need of urgent protection. Since then, it has attracted the attention of the people, affirming the unique and precious artistic value that our ancestors left behind, but also warning about the decline of Ca Tru.

Over the years, Hanoi has always actively implemented measures to protect and promote the value of Ca Tru heritage. In particular, in 2022, the Hanoi People's Council issued Resolution No. 23/2022/NQ-HDND dated December 8, 2022, regulating the treatment and support regime for "People's Artists," "Meritorious Artists," outstanding artisans and Clubs in the field of intangible cultural heritage of Hanoi city.


The treatment and support regime for artisans and clubs in the field of intangible cultural heritage, including Ca Tru heritage, according to this Resolution has many advantages and has received positive reception from the community.

In 2024, Hanoi city issued Decision No. 2342/QD-UBND dated May 4, 2024 approving the project "Protecting and promoting the values ​​of intangible cultural heritage recognized by UNESCO in Hanoi city until 2025, with a vision to 2030," including Ca Tru singing in the list of urgent protection needs.

Hanoi is currently the leading locality in the country in the number of artisans awarded the honorary title of People's Artisan and Meritorious Artisan in the field of intangible cultural heritage with 131 artisans, including 32 Ca tru artisans.

In the 4th review of the conferment dossiers in 2025, the Hanoi City Council approved the list and proposed the Council of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism to consider the list of proposals for conferring the titles of 8 People's Artists and 23 Meritorious Artists of Ca Tru Singing.

This festival continues to affirm the capital's efforts in bringing ca tru out of the state of emergency protection, while promoting it widely to the public, contributing to preserving and spreading the unique value of this traditional art form./.
