Experts say NATO need not “fear” Mr. Trump

The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) remains the cornerstone of global security, steadfastly adapting to evolving dynamics and challenges on the international stage.

This is the opinion of Mr. Philippe Dickinson, Deputy Director of the Transatlantic Security Initiative at the Atlantic Council, according to the international television channel TRT World owned by the Turkish Radio-Television Corporation (TRT).

At an event held in Washington DC, USA, reported by TRT World on June 26, the expert also emphasized the importance and resilience of NATO in the face of growing global security dynamics.

Rejecting suggestions that NATO needs to “stand up” to Mr Trump, Mr Dickinson spoke of the alliance’s enduring importance as a cornerstone of transatlantic security cooperation.

“I reject the assumption that NATO needs to resist Trump at all costs because under the former president, America’s commitment to Europe increased. I know that political rhetoric certainly prevails, but the actual policy is pro-NATO,” Dickinson said.

Speaking about the upcoming leadership transition in NATO, the Atlantic Council expert said that Mr. Mark Rutte – with his extensive political experience as a Dutch Prime Minister – can navigate the complex challenges facing the alliance and strengthen NATO unity in confronting emerging threats.

“I think he should focus on completing the work of his predecessor (Mr. Jens Stoltenberg), because this previous leader did extremely commendable work, and Mr. Mark Rutte has developed really skillful skills throughout his political career in his home country of the Netherlands,” Mr. Dickinson commented.

As the alliance celebrates its 75th anniversary next month, there is much for NATO leaders to celebrate but also a need to be cautious in the months and years ahead, Alexander Brotman wrote in the Geopolitical Monitor on June 25.

According to the expert, at the NATO Summit in Washington DC, from July 9-11, NATO's commitment to Ukraine may still be a "highlight" like at the Summit in Vilnius (Lithuania) last year.

The US and Germany remain the most cautious, always wanting to talk about a “bridge” for Ukraine to join NATO. Meanwhile, the UK, Poland and the Baltic states are determined to declare that Kiev’s path towards NATO is “irreversible”.

But everything is uncertain, with key elections looming in leading NATO powers, including France and Britain, and especially the US presidential election in November.
