On the first official competition day of ASIAD 19, the Vietnamese sports delegation opened with a bronze medal in rowing, in the women's 4-scull heavyweight category with 1 oar, with 4 athletes Pham Thi Hue, Ha Thi Vui, Dinh Thi Hao, Du Thi Bong with a time of 6 minutes 52 seconds 35. It was an interesting combination, between two seniors Pham Thi Hue (33 years old), Dinh Thi Hao (26 years old) and young girls Ha Thi Vui (24 years old) and Du Thi Bong (22 years old).

Du Thi Bong talked about her fate in rowing: "In middle school, I participated in volleyball and sports competitions at school. The coach who recruited me saw that I had potential so he called me to Hanoi to practice rowing. After 3 years, when I was called up to the national team, I went to Hai Phong to practice."

Du Thi Bong (second from right) participated in the ASIAD for the first time and won a medal.

At the age of 22, the petite girl from Cam Xuyen district has won a full set of gold medals in major and minor tournaments from Southeast Asian youth, Asian youth, SEA Games, Asian championship and now a bronze medal in her first time attending ASIAD, in the heavyweight category that is not her forte. The price of glorious achievements for herself and the Fatherland is the long days away from home. For girls who are still of school age, 7 years away from the arms and warmth of their family and parents requires them to have great will, effort and sacrifice.

Du Thi Bong added: "It's a pity, but we did our best. Their abilities are much higher than ours, they have participated in competitions in the world arena while this is the first time the four sisters have joined a boat to compete together on the race track."

Meanwhile, Pham Thi Hue has reached the milestone of participating in 4 ASIADs, happily sharing: "We have won small medals, but that is also a small part of the efforts of the 4 of us sisters to bring back to Vietnamese sports and our country. Today is only a bronze medal, but that will be the motivation for us sisters to try together. This is my 4th time participating in ASIADs, if the passion and strength are still there, we will keep trying."

Standing next to her, Dinh Thi Hao said: "It feels great, the four sisters tried their best together. No matter what the result is, we are still happy and proud. Hopefully in the next congresses, the young people and the younger generations will achieve even higher medals."

The bronze medal is even more meaningful when knowing that athletes like Du Thi Bong and Ha Thi Vui, who were competing in the light boat category, switched to the heavy boat category. Ha Thi Vui said: "If we compete in the light boat category, our opponents are in the same weight class, on par with each other, not as different as when we switched from the light boat to the heavy boat. I also competed in the final rowing event for the women's 8-boat category, heavy single oar category with my sisters. Hopefully we will achieve the best results." Ha Thi Vui's joy doubled when she participated in the ASIAD for the first time, winning the first medal for the Vietnamese sports delegation on her birthday.
