Proposal to start construction of Ho Chi Minh City - Can Tho railway in 2027

The Ministry of Construction said that the My Thuan Project Management Board has just submitted a pre-feasibility study report for the Ho Chi Minh City - Can Tho railway project, proposing to start construction in 2027 and put the project into operation from 2035.

According to the proposal, the railway line is 175.2km long, 1,435mm gauge, designed speed of 160km/h, transporting both passengers and goods, passing through 5 provinces and cities: Ho Chi Minh City, Tay Ninh, Dong Thap , Vinh Long and Can Tho.

The project has 56% of bridge and 44% of earthwork. Of these, there are 3 large river bridges (Saigon, Dong Vam Co, Tay Vam Co) and 2 especially large river bridges (Tien River and Hau River).

The project's land clearance requirement is 801.5 hectares, 11,437 households must be resettled. The consulting unit proposed that the project be publicly invested with a total investment of phase 1 (single track, design speed 160km/h) of about 173,643 billion VND; phase 2 (completion of double track, design speed 160km/h) of about 64,973 billion VND.

The My Thuan Project Management Board proposed to submit to the National Assembly for approval of the project investment policy in the fourth quarter of 2025; approval in the third quarter of 2026; site clearance from the third quarter of 2026; completion of overall technical design in 2026; completion of technical design, selection of construction contractor to start construction at the end of 2027; basically completion in 2035.
