20 year old girl has 2 large tumors on both ovaries

On March 14, information from Phu Tho Province Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital said that recently, doctors from the Department of Gynecology and Endocrinology of the hospital had successfully performed laparoscopic surgery to remove two large ovarian dermoid cysts for a 20-year-old patient, helping to preserve healthy ovarian parenchyma to maintain the patient's reproductive function.

Accordingly, patient LTT (20 years old, in Doan Hung, Phu Tho) was brought to the hospital by his family with symptoms of abdominal pain, abnormally large abdomen and frequent urination. Through examination and necessary paraclinical tests, doctors discovered that both of the patient's ovaries had large tumors, in which the tumor in the right ovary was about 110 x 90 mm in size, the tumor in the left ovary was 80 x 70 mm in size.

After the examination results, the patient is indicated to be hospitalized for further in-depth diagnostic tests and to perform surgery to remove the tumor as soon as possible. If not promptly intervened, these tumors are at risk of twisting and rupturing, seriously affecting the patient's health.

After consultation, the patient was assigned to laparoscopic surgery to remove the tumor. Dr. Pham Thi Anh Ngoc - Deputy Head of the Department of Gynecology and Endocrinology said: When entering the abdomen, the doctors observed that the patient's 2 ovaries had 2 large dermoid tumors, occupying almost the entire abdomen, making it very difficult to observe with a light.

However, the doctors still decided to perform laparoscopic tumor removal surgery to minimize the level of invasiveness, while still preserving healthy ovarian tissue and retaining reproductive function because the patient was very young and had never given birth.

After a successful surgery, the patient continues to be monitored at the hospital. With minimally invasive endoscopic surgery, postoperative patients have a shorter hospital stay, faster recovery time, less pain, less bleeding and guaranteed aesthetics.

In the case of patient T., thanks to laparoscopic surgery that preserved healthy ovarian tissue, the patient was able to get pregnant normally after about 3 menstrual cycles.

What is ovarian dermoid cyst?

According to Dr. Pham Thi Anh Ngoc, ovarian dermoid cysts are tumors that develop inside the ovaries, containing sebum, bones, hair, skin, etc., commonly found in women between 20 and 30 years old, but can also appear at older ages.

The cause of ovarian dermoid cysts can be due to endocrine disorders, early menstruation, thyroid dysfunction, pregnancy or miscarriage. Most ovarian dermoid cysts are benign and asymptomatic, but if not detected and treated promptly, they can cause dangerous complications such as ovarian torsion, rupture causing peritonitis.

From this case, doctors recommend that women should have regular gynecological examinations to detect early diseases related to the ovaries. When detecting ovarian tumors, patients should go to specialized hospitals to get advice from doctors for appropriate intervention.
