In a study recently published in the Journal of Psychiatric Research, scientists at Stanford University have discovered the use of virtual reality (VR) technology to help people with hoarding disorder evaluate their possessions and boldly clean their homes.

Accordingly, people diagnosed with hoarding disorder, equipped with virtual reality headsets and handheld controllers, will have the opportunity to view panoramic views of their homes and possessions created with 3D simulation photos, then virtually practice sorting and gradually eliminating items.

The results are promising, says Carolyn Rodriguez, professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at Stanford University School of Medicine. After 16 weeks of participating in the experience, 78% of participants confirmed that VR therapy helped them let go of things, be more aggressive in getting rid of things, and start cleaning up their living space when they step into real life.
