Veterans' affection

After the war, returning to civilian life, veteran Trinh Phu Thien still kept the spirit of Uncle Ho's soldier. He is currently the Head of the Phu Loc Village Elderly Association, Head of the Liaison Committee of Regiment 1, Ba Gia Regiment. In each position, he devoted a lot of effort to supporting his comrades, wounded soldiers, martyrs and people with meritorious services to the revolution.

As a member of the Review Council of Binh Trung commune (formerly), he directly participated in verifying and certifying documents during the resistance war, helping his comrades and comrades enjoy the State's policies.

He still remembers a special memory in 2010. At that time, a relative of a martyr from the North came to ask to move the grave back to his hometown. He was the one who directly verified the identity. That was martyr Tran Van Kien, a special forces soldier who sacrificed his life in the battle of Chau O bridge between 1973 and 1974. He carried a 1.2 quintal bomb to attack the bridge to cut off the enemy's communication line, but unfortunately was shot down. After that battle, his comrades found his body and buried it in Go Soi, Binh Trung commune. Mr. Thien shared: "That day, my comrades and I buried him, so I confirmed that there was a martyr's grave in Go Soi and agreed to excavate it."

For over 10 years, Mr. Trinh Phu Thien and his wife have spent part of their war invalids' allowance to share with the community. Every year, he donates 3-5 million VND to support the elderly, the lonely, and households in difficult circumstances in Phu Loc village. Not only that, for many years now, he has also maintained the "love breakfast" program every Sunday morning, giving hot porridge to poor families in the village.

Veteran Nguyen Ban (95 years old, Phu Loc village), who was awarded the Second Class Resistance Medal, a revolutionary soldier who was imprisoned by the enemy, emotionally shared: "I am very happy to receive the attention from Mr. Thien. I hope that these humanitarian acts will be replicated for future generations to follow."

Passing the torch to the younger generation

For nearly 15 years now, he has been entrusted by the Veterans Association of Binh Trung commune (formerly) with the sacred task of passing on the revolutionary spirit to the younger generation through talks about the Party's history and hometown traditions, while also propagating policies and regimes for people with meritorious services.

On the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the Van Tuong Victory (August 18, 1965 - August 18, 2025), Mr. Thien, as Deputy Squad Leader of Mortar Squad 81, Regiment 1, Ba Gia Regiment, spoke on behalf of his comrades. His simple voice seemed to bring listeners back to the days of fire and bullets.

He said: “I still remember clearly the days of “mid-August”, in the early autumn of Quang Ngai , we soldiers, most of whom were still very young, carrying with us a steadfast belief in the Party, on the day of national reunification, fought with all our courage and the spirit of “determination to die for the Fatherland”. Blood was shed, comrades fell, but it was in that hardship that we forged our will and undying patriotism”.

His military career was associated with many milestones. In 1960, at the age of 15, he joined the Binh Trung commune guerrillas; in 1964, he enlisted at Construction Site 1, Regiment 1, Ba Gia Regiment, Division 2, Military Region 5; he participated in the battles of Ba Gia and Van Tuong. In 1966, in the battle of Hiep Duc, Quang Nam province (old), he was wounded and was hidden and protected by the local people.

In 1967, he went to the North for treatment, study, and was admitted to the Party. In 1971, he volunteered to return to the battlefield. During the period 1973-1974, he was Party Secretary and Head of the Binh Trung Commune Uprising Committee. After the liberation, he continued to hold many positions. In 2007, he retired.

Mr. Thien's journey of fighting and dedication is a living proof of loyalty to the Fatherland - the foundation for the younger generation to believe in what he passed on.

“Our generation is proud to have completed our fighting mission, contributing to the country’s unification, innovation and development. We believe that the young generation today and tomorrow will continue and promote the tradition of patriotism, and contribute their efforts to build an increasingly rich, prosperous and happy country,” he shared.

Mr. Nguyen Hien, Head of the Elderly Association of Tang Loc hamlet (Phu Loc village), said: “Mr. Thien’s actions not only demonstrate the kindness and affection of a veteran, but also contribute to spreading the revolutionary spirit to the younger generation, with the message of living beautifully and responsibly. That is how he continues to inspire and foster humanistic values for the community.”
