German police said on February 13 that a car drove into a group of protesters in the southwestern German city of Munich, injuring at least 20 people.

German authorities launched a major operation near Munich's central train station, Reuters reported. The driver who caused the accident was arrested at the scene, but details about his identity and motive have not been released.

The people hit by the car were taking part in a protest related to a strike organized by the Verdi union, according to local broadcaster BR. The protesters were employees of local childcare services, according to a statement from the Verdi union, according to CNN.

A witness said police fired at the car after it veered into protesters' lane. Police detained the driver. At least 20 people were injured. "I saw a man lying under the car," the witness told Germany's BR24 program.

The incident took place right before the Munich Security Conference - an important event scheduled to open on February 14, bringing together top world leaders to discuss hot global issues. US Vice President JD Vance and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky are expected to attend the conference.

The Munich Security Conference venue is just 1.5 km away from where the car accident occurred.
