Strengthening English in schools, to form a generation of global citizens

The Ministry of Education and Training has just submitted to the Prime Minister for approval the Project to make English the second language in schools for the period 2025 - 2030, with a vision to 2045. This is considered a strategic step to improve foreign language skills for the young generation, gradually meeting the requirements of international integration.

With the importance of English in international integration, many primary schools in the province have introduced English into teaching for students from grade 1 instead of starting to teach English to grade 3 students as before.

In the 2025-2026 school year, Trung Vuong Primary School (Tuy Hoa Ward) has 1,656 students/47 classes. Since the beginning of the school year, the school has organized English lessons for students in grades 1 and 2, 2 periods per week; from grades 3 to 5, 4 periods per week. Ms. Dang Thi Thanh, Principal of Trung Vuong Primary School, shared: “At the primary level, if a natural English-speaking environment is created, students will absorb quickly. Therefore, in the 2025-2026 school year, the school's English teaching staff will ensure that the school organizes English lessons for all students in all grades in the school. In the near future, the school will invest in more equipment, learning materials... to improve the quality of teaching and learning.”

At Nguyen Viet Xuan Primary School (Tan An Ward), English has become one of the strong subjects with many specific activities, creating a vibrant and effective learning environment for students. Classes always maintain a lively "English learning corner", encouraging students to interact. The team of teachers is dynamic, always striving to study, research and be creative with many impressive initiatives. Specifically: using creative teaching aids to create excitement for students to learn English in class; integrating local documents into lectures to help students learn the language and understand more about the culture where they live...

Ms. Nguyen Thi Cay, Principal of Nguyen Viet Xuan Primary School, said that the school always creates favorable conditions for teachers and students to practice English skills. Teachers are encouraged to apply active teaching methods, focusing on students and choosing appropriate content and materials so that students can learn all four skills (listening, speaking, reading, writing). The school also regularly organizes competitions and contests related to English to create a playground for students to demonstrate their English skills.

According to the assessment of the Ministry of Education and Training, making English a second language is a breakthrough that is expected to contribute to forming a generation of global citizens with the necessary capacity for lifelong learning, creativity and confidence to integrate into the international context.

Mr. Huynh Xuan Mai, Principal of Nguyen Thi Minh Khai High School, said that the school has built an English Academic Club that attracts many students in the school to participate. The students themselves create topics for activities such as: National Day September 2, Vietnamese Women's Day October 20, Vietnamese Teachers' Day November 20... During the activities, the students speak bilingually, are bold in communication and confident in speaking English. "In the near future, the school will also hold a professional group meeting to innovate English teaching methods for students; not only teaching in the traditional way but also shifting from teaching grammar and translation to developing communication skills, critical thinking and skills in using English in practice," said Mr. Huynh Xuan Mai.

Over the years, Dong Du Secondary and High School has always paid attention to students' English learning in the direction of developing skills (listening, speaking, reading, writing); focusing on creating a practical environment for students through competitions, group activities, and integrating into school-level knowledge competitions. The school invites foreign teachers to teach to increase their English reflexes. Thereby, many students of the school have achieved high scores in exams and competitions.

Mr. Nguyen Phu, Vice Principal of Dong Du Secondary and High School, said that starting from 2021 - 2022, the school will coordinate with relevant units to organize English learning for students and issue Cambridge international certificates (for secondary school students) and IELTS certificates (for high school students). In the coming time, the school will have a plan to support teachers in self-study, organize foreign language teaching for all teachers (not English teachers) to help teachers communicate in basic English with students and colleagues in the school...; thereby, creating an English communication environment for all students and teachers, aiming to make English the second language in the school.

At the college and university levels, schools have been training and standardizing their teaching staff, especially pedagogical schools that are at the forefront of innovating training programs, helping foreign language pedagogical students meet international standards and be able to teach bilingually in the future. According to Dr. Tran Lang, Principal of Phu Yen University, the project of the Ministry of Education and Training will open up great opportunities for universities in internationalizing the training environment. When students are able to study and research in English, we will easily cooperate with international schools, enhancing the position of Vietnamese education.
