The ironic incident happened during a visit to Venice at the end of September by a female tourist named Wiktoria Guzenda.

The video shows Wiktoria walking down the stairs while holding her phone and suddenly slipping and falling into the water. Afterwards, the female tourist had to sit down and clean the scratches on her leg because she trusted the navigation app too much.
"When Google Maps says go straight but you're in Venice," Wiktoria wrote in the caption.
After being posted, the "half-laughing, half-crying" incident of the Polish female tourist caused many mixed opinions on social networks. Some comments said that Wiktoria was too "reliant" on the navigation application on her phone without any real assessment.
"Didn't she imagine what would happen if she walked straight down the steps towards the canal like that?" one commenter said.
"Stop blindly trusting GPS devices and trust your eyes," another wrote.

Meanwhile, many people believe that the incident has nothing to do with the navigation app. "Maybe she slipped when she tried to stop to take a photo," one account commented.
However, this is not the first time Venice has recorded foreign tourists "falling" into the canals here like the case of Wiktoria Guzenda.
According to local travel websites, popular navigation apps like Google Maps are not effective and accurate when used in Venice for a number of reasons.
First, the city does not use street name-house number addresses like many other places. Instead, Venice is divided into 6 districts (sestieri) with their own numbering, which can "jump" from one building to another without any rules.
Venice is also famous for its dense canal system. Small bridges are mistaken for walkways by map applications, and small alleys are positioned as main streets.
Another problem is that phone navigation apps cannot update water level elevation to give the most accurate instructions.
"Google Maps often directs tourists to routes that don't exist, or are blocked by canals. Many people stand on the edge of the canal only to discover they can't make the turn they were told to make on their phone," Tour Leader Venice wrote.
