How do Vietnamese candidates' IELTS scores compare to other countries?

Statistical data from the IELTS test organizers in 2022 shows that Vietnam's IELTS performance is currently ranked 23rd out of 40 surveyed countries.

According to data from the organizing committee, the average IELTS score of Vietnamese candidates in 2022 is 6.2 out of a total score of 9.0.

This achievement is on par with some countries in the region such as India, South Korea, and Pakistan.

Regarding component scores, Vietnamese candidates performed best in two skills: listening and reading, with a score of 6.4.

The average writing score of Vietnamese candidates is 6.0. Meanwhile, speaking is the lowest of the four skills, with an average score of 5.8.

Compared to other countries in the Southeast Asian region, Malaysia has the best performance with an overall score of 7.0. Malaysia's component scores are 7.5 (listening), 7.2 (reading), 6.4 (writing) and 6.8 (speaking) respectively.

Also in the Southeast Asia region, candidates from the Philippines, Indonesia, and Myanmar have higher total IELTS scores than Vietnamese candidates.

Specifically, the Philippines has a total score of 6.8, Indonesia 6.7 and Myanmar 6.6.

Of the 40 countries surveyed, Spanish candidates had the highest overall IELTS score, with an average score of 7.1.

The IELTS Organizing Committee has statistics on the percentage of scores of Vietnamese candidates taking the exam in 2022. Accordingly, the Vietnamese candidates with the highest score are 6.0, with a rate of 22%.

Next in line is 6.5 with 19%, 5.5 with 17% and 7.0 with 14%.

Only 1% of Vietnamese candidates scored 8.5 and 4% of candidates scored 8.0.
