“The Last Wish” - Smile to Remember!

The comedy “The Last Wish” cleverly and humorously addresses the deep feelings of adolescence, bringing laughter to the audience. Behind that are moments of silence and reflection on a friendship that is noisy and silly but very beautiful and sincere; remembering the love of parents for their children, although different in expression but sharing the same boundless love.

The movie is showing in theaters nationwide.

The film revolves around 3 characters: Hoang (Avin Lu), Long (Ly Hao Manh Quynh) and Thy (Hoang Ha) - a group of close friends from childhood to adulthood. Unexpectedly, Hoang is paralyzed due to amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and only has a few months left to live. On his 18th birthday, Hoang confided to his two close friends about his last wish: to become a man and taste the "forbidden fruit" before he dies. Because they want to help Hoang not have regrets, Thy and Long do everything they can to help their friend fulfill that wish. However, they encounter many ironic, troublesome, and funny situations...

Being a remake of the Korean film “The Last Ride” (2016), the film has a solid and interesting script. However, the problem of localizing famous foreign films is never simple. Fortunately, “The Last Wish” has done a good job in this aspect, bringing a warm and meaningful comedy.

Compared to the original, the film has changed when the group of friends changed from 3 men to 2 men and 1 woman to exploit many aspects and increase psychological depth. The comedy situations are also adapted to suit the context and culture of Vietnam. Most importantly, the film still retains the spirit of the original work about friendship and family love in a sincere and touching way.

The audience laughed out loud at Long and Thy's tricks and plans to find someone to help Hoang fulfill his wish before leaving this world, but all of them failed. They failed because they were too naive, their simple and direct approach and persuasion of the other side made them suffer terrible consequences. Not to mention, they also had to deal with and hide from Hoang's parents and their own parents, making the situation even more awkward and difficult...

The generation gap in Vietnamese families is also an issue that is cleverly integrated and handled in this film. In addition to hiding from parents and secretly fulfilling Hoang's wish, the film also depicts the difference in the thinking of parents and children, the way of raising and loving each family. Thy's family lacks a father, Long's family lacks a mother, Hoang has both parents but all 3 families lack a common voice, understanding and sympathy of the 2 generations.

Circumstances create the personality, worries, and desires of children. Thy is a girl with a strong and tough personality, on the outside to reassure her mother, but deep inside she is self-conscious and has feelings that are difficult to share with anyone. Long is enthusiastic and cheerful but always craves closeness and recognition from his father. Hoang is loved and cared for by his parents but does not dare to openly confide in them, share with them, and only tries to please them...

The film puts three young people on the brink of loss and everyday collisions to find the answer: what is it like to live a meaningful life? What is true love? Other issues such as school bullying, teenage love, homosexuality... are also mentioned gently and transformed into humorous, cheerful situations. The issues are connected and told seamlessly and rhythmically, bringing multi-dimensional emotions to the audience: sometimes laughing out loud, sometimes being moved, sometimes deeply sympathizing...

The film has a gentle and meaningful ending, making those who stay and those who leave feel at peace, without regrets. Because all the characters, whether main or supporting, realize what they need to strive for, what they need to let go of to live better or leave without attachment. The performances of the 3 main actors are all perfect, bringing youthful and memorable colors to the audience.
