The film “Cải Mã” explores the custom of reburial – a long-standing belief of the Vietnamese people, associated with the belief in the connection between the living and the dead. Producer Emily Lê said the crew wanted to touch that spiritual space not only to create a feeling of horror but also to reflect the memories and emotions that have been deeply imprinted in Vietnamese culture for many generations.
The main setting of the film is in Phu Yen - a familiar land through the lens of tourism, but now appears both poetic and mysterious. To respect the local elements, the film crew maintained the worship rituals, limiting the disruption of local life. Two important settings, the ancestral house and the Do family cemetery, were meticulously restored to be both cinematic and culturally authentic.
Unlike many other horror films, “Cái mã” does not focus on a central character but revolves around an entire family. The filming sets are closely linked to the color and personality of each character. Avin Lu, Rima Thanh Vy and Lam Thanh Nha are the main faces, alongside multi-generational actors such as Kieu Trinh, Hoang Phuc, Hoang Meo…
The crew used many indigenous materials to build the creepy atmosphere: from music , costumes, folk symbols to traditional instruments. Avin Lu and Rima Thanh Vy even learned to play the gong to get into character. “We are not making a documentary, but we still want to tell the story based on real culture,” director Thang Vu emphasized.
The film revolves around the Do family. After a series of disasters, Ms. Tu Chanh (Kieu Trinh) calls on her brothers to return to their hometown to rebury their ancestors' graves. However, from the moment the first hoe marks hit the ground, hidden secrets gradually surface, dragging the whole family into a terrifying spiral.
The film “Cải Mã” initially announced that Thiên An would play an important role. However, after she got involved in a lawsuit with Jack, many viewers argued, causing the film crew to be in trouble. Currently, the producer has not announced whether the actress will continue to act in “Cải Mã” or her role will be cut.
