Businesses 'celebrate victory', enjoy dramatic moments from last night

It was a memorable night for both the American people and businesses, with the “celebratory” atmosphere spreading from the polling stations to the bars.

For many Americans, election night is a chance to unwind after months of intense and nerve-wracking campaigning, which has included unprecedented events like the Democratic Party switching candidates at the last minute and two assassination attempts on the Republican candidate in this year's race for the White House.

Of course, in the crucial and dramatic moments before the preliminary results of the US presidential election are announced, businesses are trying to "enjoy" the last business opportunities of the once-in-four-years election season, with events and promotions.

In this year’s election campaign, while the polarization between the two parties and the great divide in American society is more evident than ever, businesses have always had their own way of “healing” by applying a bipartisan approach… Whether it’s Kamala Kush or MAGA-rita, restaurants and retailers are happy to serve voters on both sides. After all, for most people, green (the color of the dollar) is the more important color.

On election night, introverts, even if they aren’t drawn to the streets, can still make a “special impression.” In 2020, for example, a food delivery company reported a 20% increase in sales on election night compared to the day before.

Online commerce giant Amazon is also taking advantage of the final hours of the 2024 US presidential election to expand its media capabilities.

However, the US election did not bring luck to all businesses.

The times are also bringing a lot of anxiety. Nearly 70% of Americans said the election has caused “significant” stress, according to an August survey by the American Psychological Association. That can make it difficult for workers to concentrate and affect their productivity. A survey of American managers by ResumeBuilder.com last month found that 38% felt the presidential election had hurt morale and productivity.

For many, the concern is not just about the election results, but also about the reaction to them. With society so polarized, many are worried about an uncertain future after the election. This election is not just a contest between candidates, but also a test of America's stability and unity.

Business Insider recently published an article warning that, with tensions rising, the United States is preparing for civil unrest after the election. A data analytics and risk management firm ranked the United States as one of the five countries most at risk of civil unrest (the other four being Brazil, Colombia, Chile, and South Africa).

The increased security measures and concerns about protests are a reflection of the tense political climate the United States is experiencing.

Fears of post-election protests have prompted businesses and public buildings across the country to erect barricades and board up windows. Many have boarded up their windows in preparation for potential unrest. In downtown Portland, banks and offices have been reinforced, while in Washington, many stores and restaurants near the White House have been boarded up with thick wooden boards as a precaution.

With both Republicans and Democrats neck and neck, both candidates made their final pitches to swing-state voters who will decide a historic election, no matter who wins.

Ms. Harris would be the first woman, the first Black woman and the first person of South Asian descent to be elected president of the United States if she defeats Mr. Trump. If Mr. Trump wins, he would be the first new president to be indicted and convicted of a felony, as well as the second president in American history to win non-consecutive terms in the White House.
