The data was released in a new report on travel trends in Asia- Pacific (APAC) 2025 by Traveloka, which surveyed 12,000 people from nine markets in the region. Accordingly, 2025 will be the year domestic travel takes the lead and is the main driving force behind tourism recovery in the APAC block. Vietnam is no exception, with 49% of respondents saying they prioritize domestic destinations, while 31% choose international travel.

However, this rate is still lower than the choice in Thailand, Indonesia and Japan, where 70% of participants from these countries said they prefer to travel domestically.

Price is the top deciding factor in travel choices, with nearly 50% of tourists in Singapore, Japan, Australia, Malaysia and Indonesia choosing a destination based on price. This rate in Vietnam is 37%. Korean, Indian and Vietnamese tourists, although they value price, still tend to consider the comfort and convenience of their accommodations when making their decisions.

Cash is still king as tourists still prefer to use this payment method when traveling. 58% of Vietnamese tourists surveyed choose to pay for everything in cash, followed by credit cards (53%) and payment apps (48%).

When asked about factors that encourage tourists to visit a new destination, 53% of Vietnamese tourists said that social media is an important source of information to rely on. The remaining 40% said that they choose a destination based on recommendations from relatives and friends.

Tourists have a strong preference for beaches, with 59% choosing these places to visit when traveling, higher than the regional average of 56%. Relaxation and energy recovery trips are the main purpose of Vietnamese tourists when traveling.

Sustainability is also increasingly shaping the choices of travelers. 89% of Vietnamese travelers consider this criterion when deciding to choose a trip, higher than the regional average of 80%. According to Traveloka, this creates opportunities for travel service providers in Vietnam to attract customers by offering more environmentally friendly travel experiences.
