Does using lubricant affect sperm?

VnExpressVnExpress18/02/2024

I like to use lubricant for gentle sex, but my husband said it's dangerous for sperm and reduces sperm quality. Is that true? (Nga, 30 years old, Hanoi ).

Reply:

The factors that determine a man's fertility are the sperm index in semen, mobility level... If the sperm is healthy, the chance of conception will be higher and vice versa.

Using lubricants makes the intercourse process easier and more convenient. Currently, there is no research showing that using lubricants reduces fertility. However, to be more careful, you can use lubricants that do not inhibit sperm motility, such as mineral oil, canola oil or hydroxyethylcellulose-base (Pre-Seed). Absolutely do not use lubricants of unknown origin, floating on the internet or using unorthodox methods.

To improve sperm quality by adding some foods such as oysters, shrimp, crab, red meat and poultry, whole grains, yogurt and dairy products, vegetable oils. Some green vegetables, spices such as broccoli, cabbage, asparagus, tomatoes, garlic, sweet peppers.

Men should limit stimulants such as alcohol, coffee, cigarettes, processed foods... Couples should exercise, go to bed early, and reduce stress and tension.

In addition, sperm cannot be observed with the naked eye. The signs are usually thin semen, clumping, thickening or changing color from milky white to red or blue. To most accurately assess sperm quality, you should go to the hospital for a check-up.
