Hoan My Cuu Long: Saving the heart of a 14-year-old girl using minimally invasive methods

Doctors at Hoan My Cuu Long Hospital have just performed a successful percutaneous parachute closure procedure on a 14-year-old patient with an atrial septal defect. This is an important step forward in the treatment of congenital heart disease, helping to reduce risks, limit complications and shorten recovery time.

Coming to Hoan My Cuu Long Hospital for consultation, the family of patient TTKT (14 years old, Can Tho City) is still facing many thoughts about the journey to find the best treatment opportunity for their daughter.

According to the family, the family had previously visited a number of medical facilities, however, with the daughter being diagnosed with congenital heart disease requiring early intervention, the method the medical facilities recommended to the family was open surgery. With this open surgery method, the patient will have to face a scar on the chest that may follow her for the rest of her life and a longer recovery time after surgery.

At Hoan My Cuu Long Hospital, the patient was ordered by the doctor to perform a Doppler echocardiogram. The doctors determined that the patient had an atrial septal defect with a hole size that could be treated by percutaneous parachute intervention, a minimally invasive procedure that helps close the atrial septal defect without opening the chest.

With modern parachute intervention techniques, many pediatric patients can avoid major surgery, ensuring aesthetics and long-term quality of life. This is a safe, minimally invasive method, suitable for many patients, especially children and adolescents.

The team of the Department of Cardiology - Endovascular Intervention performed a procedure to completely close the atrial septal defect for baby T. in about 45 minutes. Thus, the baby did not need to undergo open heart surgery. After the procedure, the patient's health was stable, he recovered quickly and was discharged for outpatient check-up after 24 hours.

MSc. Dr. Quach Tan Dat - Deputy Head of the Department of Cardiology, Hoan My Cuu Long Hospital said: "The good news is that not all cases of atrial septal defect require open heart surgery. With the success of this case, it has opened up the opportunity to access minimally invasive methods for children and adolescents with congenital heart defects in the Mekong Delta region. At the same time, it also proves the progress in the treatment of congenital heart disease in this region."

According to the Ministry of Health , each year in Vietnam there are about 10,000 - 12,000 newborns with congenital heart disease, of which atrial septal defect is one of the most common forms. Treatment of these defects has a "golden time" - that is, the stage when the disease has not caused severe pulmonary hypertension, has not reversed the flow of blood through the heart, and has not weakened the heart.

If detected early and intervened at this stage, the treatment process will be simpler, less risky, the recovery rate will be high and complications will be minimized later. On the contrary, if detected late, the disease can progress severely, causing great pressure on the heart and lungs, making treatment more complicated, reducing effectiveness and increasing the risk of complications.
