Mr. Minh (41 years old, Hanoi ) said that before, while being intimate with his wife, a slip caused his penis to hit hard. Immediately after, he felt a sharp pain, his penis quickly swelled, bruises spread and became deformed.
He immediately went to Hanoi Medical University Hospital for examination. Here, male doctors examined him and found serious injuries, with a swollen, deformed penis, blood clots, and bruising spreading to the scrotum.
Ultrasound results showed a large hematoma at the base of the penis and scrotum, with suspected damage to the corpus spongiosum. Determining this to be a complex penile trauma, with a high likelihood of a ruptured corpus cavernosum, the doctors ordered immediate emergency surgery.

Cavernous body rupture is not a common injury but an urgent male medical emergency (Illustration: Istock).
In the operating room, the surgeons discovered a fracture in the right corpus cavernosum, measuring about 1x1cm, with jagged edges, accompanied by many blood clots around it. This was the culprit causing the severe hematoma and swelling.
Doctors quickly removed the crushed tissue, cleaned and meticulously sutured the white fascia of the corpus cavernosum, restoring the anatomical structure of the penis.
Master - Doctor Nguyen Xuan Duc Hoang, Department of Andrology and Gender Medicine, Hanoi Medical University Hospital, said that many people mistakenly think that the penis has bones and can be broken like the bones of the arms and legs. In fact, that is not the case.
The penis is made up of erectile tissue tubes called the corpora cavernosa and the spongy bodies. The outside of these corpora cavernosa is covered by a very tough and strong sheath called the tunica albuginea.
When erect, blood is pumped into the cavernous bodies, causing the penis to become hard and the white fascia to stretch to its maximum. If at this time, the penis is bent suddenly and violently (due to slipping out during sex, difficult position, self-bending...), the pressure is too great, causing the white fascia to tear. This is the phenomenon of cavernous body rupture or penile fracture.
At that time, men often hear a characteristic crackling or popping sound, accompanied by severe pain, the penis quickly softens, swells, bruises and deforms quickly, and can look like an eggplant.
Doctors advise that genital trauma, especially penile trauma, is a sensitive topic that makes many men shy away, even trying to endure it in silence.
However, this silence can come at a very high price, leading to permanent complications that affect physiological function and male prowess.
“Corpus cavernosum rupture needs to be treated surgically as soon as possible, ideally within the first 24 hours. Delay increases the risk of complications,” Dr. Hoang emphasized.
Therefore, men absolutely should not self-treat at home. Any method such as applying leaves, applying hot compresses, or arbitrarily buying medicine to drink are ineffective and only waste precious time, making the injury more severe.
Delay in treatment can lead to dangerous complications such as erectile dysfunction, penile curvature (permanent curvature of the penis during erection, causing pain and difficulty during intercourse), sclerotic plaques (formation of hard scar tissue in the corpora cavernosa, causing pain and deformity of the penis), abscesses, infections...
