Leg severed by lawn mower

Recently, 108 Military Central Hospital received a female patient who had a work accident and had her lower leg severed by a lawn mower.

Patient VTH (41 years old), from Vi Xuyen, Tuyen Quang (former Ha Giang province), while working in the fields, had his right leg severed by a flying lawn mower blade. Luckily, the patient was given a tourniquet by a worker and transferred to Ha Giang General Hospital. At the same time, the severed leg was kept in cold storage and transferred with the patient to 108 Military Central Hospital after 9 hours of being severed.

Although the time of transfer to the hospital was late compared to the request for limb reattachment, however, under the efforts of the staff of the 108 Military Central Hospital, the patient's lower leg was successfully reattached. Currently, one week after surgery, the patient is healthy and can move his toes.

Doctor Nguyen Quang Vinh, Department of Upper Limb Trauma and Microsurgery, 108 Central Military Hospital, shared that the surgical team had to consider carefully before proceeding with the reattachment because the patient arrived late. In addition to the low success rate, the risk of poisoning after limb implantation is very high, and can even affect the patient's life.

At the hospital, the patient had surgery to reattach his lower leg as quickly as possible and the surgery was a success.

According to Dr. Vinh, with severed limbs, patients need to receive good first aid, preserve the limb properly (preliminary washing, wrapping in a clean towel, tightly wrapping in a plastic bag and placing in a thermos of ice, avoiding direct contact of the limb with ice) and quickly transfer to hospitals that can perform reattachment.

Until now, our country is still mostly agricultural production. Nowadays, with the development of science and technology, farmers have less hardship thanks to the application of machinery in production.

However, most of the machines they use are self-purchased, self-taught or the previous person instructs the next person to use and has not been instructed on the proper usage and maintenance process. Recent accidents caused by lawn mowers have sounded the alarm bell for people when using this type of machine.
