“We are ready to take any action we can to defend our sovereign rights and interests,” Ms Kim said in a statement carried by KCNA. Her comments came after a North Korean satellite launch failed on Wednesday.

North Korea's launch appeared to have been rushed and it may take at least several weeks to fix the problem before it can launch again, a South Korean lawmaker said Wednesday, citing South Korea's intelligence agency.

In a statement about the launch, KCNA news agency said a rocket carrying a military reconnaissance satellite named "Malligyong-1" fell into the sea after an accident. The launch was later criticized by South Korea, Japan and the United States.

Any launch by Pyongyang using ballistic missile technology would violate Security Council resolutions, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said.

In her statement, Ms Kim said criticism of Wednesday's launch was "self-contradictory" because the US and other countries had launched "thousands of satellites".

In a separate statement by KCNA, North Korean Vice Foreign Minister Kim Son Gyong criticized US-led military exercises in the region, including a multinational anti-nuclear naval exercise.
